Morning everyone. Been a long while since I have posted, but I wanted to share some pics of my new project. 1978 Wes Cooley GS1000c with light crash damage. Unfortunately no pics of it stock, but we all know what they look like. I have been working on this for the last month or so, but just started taking some photos. Here is the spec list
-stock motor
-2005 gsxr front forks
-1995 cbr900rr wheels, w/180 series on the back
-1976 Ducati 860 GT fuel tank
I am currently working on the swingarm right now. I will be running dual cantilevers shocks, using the stock swingarm. Some serious notching was required to get the tire to fit, and I am currently working on the bracing for the shocks. More pis to follow
I will not be using the stock shocks that are currently on there, they are just installed for the mock up so that I can see what things will look like. Also, the swing arm is currently just tacked together, I have not as of yet completed the welding and cleaned things up yet, I just wanted to get the bike to a point where I could get it off my lift and roll it around.
thanks. Too bad it fell off the lift yesterday and put a big nasty dent in the left side of that lovely Duc tank! Had to drill it, pop it, weld up the holes, and fill what was left of the dent last night.
Clip ons and tail section should be coming in the mail at some point in time this week, then I can start mocking up the rear subframe. Also have a 5/8" offset 530 16T from sporcket in the mail so that both sprockets will line up, although the clearance at the front next to the frame will be minimal
Bike is looking good!!! But a Wes Cooley bike is pretty rare! Why did you not go with restoring back to factory? Not trying to be negative, but there are plenty of no so rare gs1000 to mod.
Not sure on the final choice for the shocks as of yet, I am sure something cool will pop up.
Yes, the Wes Cooley is a somewhat rare bike. Stock gas tank and fairing were trashed, and the bike was in pretty rough shape after the accident. Restorations just don't do it for me. I give much respect to anyone that can do them properly and not over do them, but I like changing things up a bit, can't seem to leave well enough alone. I am sure that is the same sinking ship many of us are aboard
This bike has been sitting in my garage since last July(too busy riding my supersport), but now that I have been able to acquire some parts, the progress should be fairly rapid. Unfortunately, nothing at all has been plug and play with this build, but I think most of the major obstacles are behind me.
Hopefully, the seat pan will be sitting in my garage when I get home today, so i can do a rough mock up to see what this thing will look like. I will post some more pics as soon as I have them. Clipons would be nice too, make this thing a bit easier to roll around.
finished fixing the gas tank last night. I have never had a bike fall off the lift before. A steady stream of obsceneties for about 20 minutes after it happened seemed to clear my head
OH SHIT!! that sucks!!
I know what you mean.. I've been pushing my 550 around for a few weeks with out clip ons. luckily.. I haven't dropped it. yet.. LOL
I missed that build thread. Love it. Was that a custom exhaust? Kinda what's holding up my cb750 dohc project - the mid pipe and can angle. But yeah, I'm not into full on restos. I mean we are doing restoration up to a point, but let's face it, the UJM is one boring ass look that screams "Commuter".
Kinda custom. V&H 4-2, but I added a piece between the downpipes and exhaust can to make it more upswept.
Gotta agree with you, the standard UJM look is pretty boring in my opinion, but I woulnd't mind doing a resto some day, as long as I had another bike kickin around that I could mess with!
Got some additional work done over the last week or so. Big dent in tank has been almost repaired, and most of the welding on the swingarm is complete. Alsp got the exhaust mocked up. Standard GS1000s downpipes with some cans from what I think was a Dynaglide, or maybe a roadglide, don't know Harleys too well...XFCHTLT something or other
Glad you like, unless your speechless cause it sucks
I think this thing will be pretty badass when it is done. I was supposed to be getting a tail section and clips ons in the mail this week, but I guess they got lost in the shuffle. Once I have the tail section, I will start mocking of the subframe and start figuring out where I am going to put the battery and electronics.
I think I am going to go with the stock colors(blue and white) in a similar scheme as the original. I was also thinking of painting the swingarm to match the clor of the forks, but i am not sold on that idea just yet...wait to see what it looks like with the seat on. Also, I don't know if I like the look of the cans, but I had them lying around, and they are already cored out, so less work for me
