I should add it came with no electrics or wiring so its a total rebuild, the wheels and forks are pretty clean! Now i just got to start pulling it down, once i make room that is :) the spare motors top end looks pretty clean but want to soda blast it and polish and paint it so will will pull it down and replace what needs replacing, ihave no time limit so i expect it to take a while. As long as the wife doesnt find out how much $$$$ im spending it'll be ok

stupid question time, how do i remove the generator nut? is it a reverse thread? how do you lock it to un do? cheers

Air impact. Put the transmission in gear and lock the rear wheel. It's not reverse thread, it's standard right hand, just a mother to get out.

hey jew, yeah saw in manual online, problem is motor is out of frame and i dont have air....as yet :)

im starting to doubt my ability to tear the motor down and put it back together, the manual i downloaded from DTT doesnt really have a lot of detail. so my question is .is it relatively straightforward to tear down to conrod level and then put it back together?

Hi Terry... no its not easy (but im an amateur) but hey, im doing it and dont really have a clue what im doing (learning by doing)

I can recommend the Haynes Manual if you want to tear down the engine, its what im using and id not know what to do with out it !!!!

http://www.amazon.com/Honda-7983-Owners-Workshop-Manual/dp/1850102171/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362646847&sr=8-1&keywords=Haynes+Honda+CB750

Re the generator nut, I dont remember having any major problems with mine (lucky me I know), my engine (as you can see from the pics) was in a bit of a state so most bolts were not so easy to get off... Just try a little more force (maybe a longer bar), not too much and with a little patience it should come off !!!

Keep me posted !

Well got the motor out and started cutting off some stuff then had a second look and think the frame might be bent from just past the swing arm, if so do iheat itand try and bend it back or just weld the hoop on and then see what it looks like?

I hope you can see it here

HEY! I am in the middle of a DOHC 750 Basket case myself, but I'm going back together already. Mines a "C" model and I don't know if you saw those in NZ or not. Kind of a US nitch "cruiser" style. See "Rock-It" in my sig line, you might wat to add a link to this in yours as well. Helps get exposure so people can find your thread.
If you are mechanically inclined, and can follow the steps in a manual, you should be fine. I posted the Factory Service Manual here on DTT, maybe that's the one you were refering to http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=44399.0 Can't get any better than Mother Honda for instruction on how to work on your bike. I do like the pics in Haynes manuals, but for true tech instruction I go to the manual the factory provided their guys that serviced it in the field.
Also, there is a DOHC CB750 thread here http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=44355.0 where us red headed step children of the 750's been hang out. C'mon over and you'll be exposed to a bunch of guys with a lot of knowledge specific to your bike. Maybe link to this there, I am sure others will come ;)
As far as the bent frame goes, I am not seeing it. But not sure exactly where or which side you are asking about. If you open your pic in MS paint, you can draw a circle around the area in question and I (we) can compare. Kinda like this...

well very slow progress, picked up another rolling frame with motor and have welded on the hoop on one frame, unfortunately its winter here and a bit cold and wet so cant really get into it too much , pics to follow

Took off the head and barrels and made the newb mistake of dropping a washer into the crankcase, i was hoping to only tear down to the pistons but the conrods look a bit rusty so it,ll be all the way down now, there was a few rusty bits on both cams as the motors been sitty in a cold leaky shed for a couple of months, im hoping they polish up well!

The pistons and bore look ok so i should be able to use them, the head gasket looked new. There was lots of dust/crud around the head bolts which was almost like sawdust? I another complete motor and rolling frame that im thinking of taking to a pro close to me for him to check it out (its supposed to be sweet)
