79' DOHC CB750 carb. pod filter tuning?

I have a 1979 CB750K. Im building it brat style. I want to empty out the center section. So the air box has to go. Is there any sort of "kit" or what parts I should buy to maximize carb tuning once I put pod filters on? Any hints or tips? Ive heard nothing but "ahh youll never get them to run 100%".

I have a DOHC as well... the carbs are junk (IMHO)... people have been able to get them to work with pods by blocking the outer pods, jetting, jetting again, jetting again... but I dont see the point... accept them for what they are or do a carb swap. By the time you get them running acceptably you will have spent alot of valubale time and money that could have been put towards a carb swap. I am yet to see a DOHC owner that says "my bike runs sooooo much better with pods" haha.

The only thing I see as an option is to build a custom air box out of a flat filter so that all 4 carbs share the same volume of air but in a smaller package. Kinda like the "anti-pod" on the SOHC bikes.

Thanks for your replies. Ill have to research that panel box idea. I see what your saying. I wonder if its worth it giving it a try. The pod look will look best. Im having faith in the guy thats going to try to tune it for me. I also wonder how horrible it will be on long rides. Im not looking for highway cruising performance. I know there is always some sacrifice with looks/performance.
 
I did it on my build below. I was extremely lucky in my choice of carbs as I only needed to open up the main air jet.

In my opinion you would be better of buying a set of FCR's or the like jetted ready to go, as you could spend 3-400 on refubishing and jetting a set of old GSXR carbs, not to mention all the hours of work involved.
 
I wouldn't say that the carbs are "junk" but it's true that they do not respond well to removing the airbox. They work fine with a stock motor and airbox.

You have to decide waht's more important, a bike that runs sweetly with an airbox or runs like crap and looks "cool". Just as an side, ever notice that race bikes on which cafe racers styling is based rarely had an empty middle and almost all have fenders - because functionality comes first.

If you absolutely must get rid of the air box, then budget for replacement carbs - either GSXR or CR style depending on your budget.

But your right, I was too harsh by calling them junk... they do the job as intended... and if your riding a C model with a really comfy seat and quiet exhaust they are probably awesome.
