Hi all, I have a question regarding to my exhaust system.
I have a 79 Suzuki GS 550 with the stock 4 to 2 exhaust system.
I'd like to disassemble or cut (whichever is easier) the stock muffler and mount
a custom one.
Such as this : http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-exhaust-parts-17-inch-reverse-cone-megaphone-muffler-80-84030.html
My question is, assuming the diameters match each other, would I need to weld the two connections? or can I just bolt/clamp the connections together?
You could chop it where it welds and place a smaller diameter tube to allow the muffler to slip on, or if its a different diameter you could try an adapter piece that are used on cars to step up or down a size then weld it around
I did this to a GS850 I use to own. After cutting off the stock mufflers I welded on a short section of exhaust tubing to allow the mufflers to slip on. I sandblasted and painted the headpipes after welding, but left the mufflers chrome.
Try measuring it before you cut it. The probability of an off the shelf muffler being close to a perfect match are pretty slim but stranger things have happened.
If yours is like my GS850, the 2 into 1 collector section is two stamped pieces welded together rather than tubing, so not ideal for a slip fit. If you don't have access to a welder, an exhaust shop could probably do it for not too much money.
