79 GS550

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

if you haven't taken your moto test yet. try to do it on a small bike. when I took mine I had already been riding for a few years, but I went in on my 74 cb200 and there were about 6 other people. I was the only one who passed, I couldn't believe it. but some of the maneuvers are really tight and the other guys just couldn't do it. one guy had a harley big twin and I don't think it would be possible to get that thing through the course. but another guy had a brand new ducati superbike and he seemed like he could ride pretty well, but he couldn't do it either. he got pissed and rode off doing a wheelie at top speed. he could obviously handle his bike, but not the tight course. I scored perfect and it was a breeze. I think it was the bike that made it easy.

hope that helps some.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Yeah I think the course I am going to take provides Buell whatevers to ride. Its like a 4 day course and I can just go in and get my license after that. I cant use my bike because it is in pieces right now. I was thinking the same thing about taking the test with a smaller bike just for the fact I am a NEWB in all senses including riding. I once rode my friends dirt bike and did a wheelie and held on running behind it.....he was like why didnt you just let it go......yeah IM THAT GUY!

How do you go about using photobucket on this forum? I usually drag my pics to the desktop then I have to resize them. It would be nice to post multiple pics on one post.

Those are shocks from a cb900. Yours must be from Australia.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Well not sure what I am going to do about the shocks. They won't fit my cb (eye opening is too small, maybe need a new rubber insert to make it fit) so might just have to leave them or if I can find a pair of used zuki shocks for cheap. Trying not to dump too much money into this bike.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

I'll buy those off of you if they are not "modified" to work with your bike. I have a CB750 that I would like to put them one

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Vinnie that is what I am trying to see if they will fit on. The rubber washer thing inside the eye of the shock is too small to fit on the stock CB750 post, but If I put a rubber insert from a CB shock it will probably fit. If I don't end up putting them on the 750 I will let you know. If these shocks are upside down does that affect the quality or performance or does it just look stupid because they are on upside down.....hahaha obviously I bought the bike (of course I knew nothing at the time)?

They should fit pretty easily. I'd say try putting them on the right way. I am not sure about performance. I am nearly positive that oil reservoir was made to be a certain way up. Personal opinion: If I saw someone with shocks installed upside down I would think they did not know what they are doing. Seeing clubmans installed upside down makes me equally as irritated.

It's all personal taste though, but that's how I feel.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Yeah the 900 shocks I got went right on my bike with no trouble. But they have been modified to fit the gs. I love those shocks and have been very pleased with them on my 72 cb750. The gs has some serious potential and it must be nice to get one with all of that work already done. I can't wait to see some progress on the 750 though. I've got a big soft spot for those! Keep it up and you should have two sweet ass bikes when you're done.
BTW: I can't believe you got rid of the Rover! Dude I would've traded you three bikes for that! :p

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Yeah I know I kick my self sometimes, but it was the only way I could get motorcycles without the wife freaking out. She is still like "you are going to sell those, right?" I have to get rid of one of them once I am done, but hoping I can convince her to let me keep one.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Give her time. My wife started out sounding the same way. Now I've got three whole bikes, a tracker frame/swingarm project, and four motors laying around the garage. She says I can't have another one, but I don't believe her ;)

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Ok so I picked up the tank and seat from paint, pretty impressed with the work.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Ok so now I am going to have to make a battery encloser inside the seat and I will have to make a padded seat to put on top. One problem I have to tackle is making a steering stop of some sort. The handle bars hit the tank and the top of the tree is not original or it has been sawed off so I can not mount clubmans.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

That looks great. The steering stops aren't a big deal if yo can weld just weld a bigger tab on the front of the frame. or weld a bolt with the head cut off of it to the existing stop on the frame. And man get yourself a new chick. Like my mom says it what i do. My dad has the same addiction. Its my hobby shes got a house i have a garage and bikes.

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Get a new chick? Dude it's much easier to train the one you already have. "It's cheaper to keep her!"
Dude the tins look great. 1000% improvement on the baby blue!

Re: 79 GS550 and 74 CB750

Thanks.....as for the chick she is just worried about me splattering my guts on the road somewhere. I have to ease her into the idea. HAHAHHAHA sorry baby you got to go cuz my GS550 means too much to me!

Thompson you are totally right about welding on the bolt...I think I will have to do that.

Alex, I hope your wife never reads this! Or Brandon for that matter - could turn into best-friend-blackmail!

But the paint looks great man!
