Hi Guys,

I'm new to cafe racer builds so please take it easy on me.

So I bought a 79 honda cb650 and it didnt come with a battery. I bought a 12v 4A truegel, Small battery off of Dimecity cycles, because it was small and I want to eventually place it under my seat. I called the shop before purchasing it and asked if it was ok to use this battery and the guy who answered the phone said it was fine, all batteries are 12 volts, size is just for fitting on to your bike. I also told him which bike I had, and he still gave me the OK. Shortly after I bought the battery online.

So when I received my battery in the mail, I attached it to my bike and it did not start. All i got was a ticking sound from the starter solenoid. I was told that my battery was too weak by it size and I had a question for you guys: Will the battery work if i rewire my bike? If not, why would dimecity cycles sell me that battery, and what is the best way to return something online?

Thanks for all the reading, any bit helps. Thanks again

Might have something to do with the amp hours the battery is rated for. I have a 1980 Honda CB 650 and I'm in search of a good battery also. I believe I m just going to have to go with a pretty large one and do the best I can to hide it. Let me know though if you get a smaller battery working. It would be nice to be able to run one just so it would be easier to hide. I m trying to get my bike as clean as possible.

Batteries have a number of ratings. Voltage is one. You do need 12V.
The next rating is AH (Amp Hours). That's how much current the battery can deliver for an hour. A 4 Amp hour battery delivers 4 amps for an hour, or 1 amp for 4 hours....

The last part is CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). Thats how much current your battery can supply all at once, for starting.

The CCA and AH ratings tend to run along similar lines. A 12AH battery may do 120 CCA, A 14AH battery can supply 140 CCA...Some other types and contructions can often get higher CCA.

My CB360 Twin requires a 120 CCA battery and uses about 80 AMps to get started spinng, and about 40 amps to keep the starter motor going. Your bike requires a little more.

A 4AH battery is not going to supply enough CCA to turn over your 4 cyl. 4AH would work with a kick start only, as once you are running, the alternator supplies the actual running current, not the battery.

If you want electric start, you need a larger battery. My 750 requires a 14AH battery with 160 CCA...yours will be close to that..
