81 CB750K Brake options

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to find some info and having trouble. I have searched around a little bit.

I have an 81 CB750K that I'm currently working on fixing up. The stock braking is a little spooky to me, and I'd love to upgrade. My current system is single rotor and rear drum.

I'm curious if the front dual disk from a CB750 Custom is a swap over. I know I can switch to GSXR forks, but that is a little more than I want to do.

I can't seem to find any cut and dry answers on interchanging between DOHC models. SOHC seems to dominate Google. Here is a picture of the bike on it's way home a few months back. http://i.imgur.com/UPXCzKY.jpg

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Dave.R,

I have the same bike but 79 and am trying to make the same decision to stay with the stock brakes (that need to be fully re-kitted) or find better performing calipers. I haven't found a bolt on solution but I have found that you need to be careful when ordering parts because the F bikes (RC04) had completely different calipers to the K Bikes (RC01). However they do have the same bolt pattern to bolt onto the fork. I think CB900's were the same too.

I would assume that the F calipers were designed as the "performance" brakes in the Honda lineup. You could try find a pair of these and a disc (I think the discs were the same). This might be enough to take the "spook" out of stopping the heavy old beast.

I will keep searching and share anything I find and likewise if you find a bolt-on or easy fix solution please share.

Out of interest, what are your plans for the bike? Stock/bobber/cafe/trike/chopper/rat/brat/side car?
p.s. have you got workshop manual? If not I can send you the link or dropbox for you.

I think the single rotor bikes have an offset hub while the dual rotors have flat rotors, so I'm not sure if the caliper would line up right.

I was hoping 750c or f trees/forks could be bolted on, but I can't find any cross info, and don't want to drop the money on parts that won't work.

I'm hoping to go for a tracker/cafe style bike. It will be some progression for sure. I love the cafe look, but not sure if I'd like the sportier riding position. I have the FSM downloaded, and have used it a couple times. I just find the modify crowd normally knows more than the factory engineers, especially when its a 30-40 year old bike.

I'm not sure why the SOHC are so much more popular, but I'm starting to regret this bike.
