'81 CM400T Street tracker "Comstar Love"

Got her to fire last night and took her for a spin around the block a couple times. All went well. Sounds great.

Tonight I planned to take her for a short ride to a buddies. Got to the the bottom of the hill and the throttle cable broke. :(
Buddy loaded me up and got me back home. Not a big deal, probably a bad solder job on the cable end. Sure there will be a couple minor tweeks to deal with...

LOL I had this happen to me, if you do not have a truck and need to ride it home, you can crank the idle up to like 3500-4000 rpm and you can ride it home with just the clutch. Fire it up, rev idle, let clutch out get going, then shift, get back to 3.5-4K and shift again you can get it home, turn idle back down and fix cable.

Cheers.

Luv it! ;D

Fixed the throttle cable. Took her for a half hour ride. She's feeling reall good. Going to ride her to work tomorrow if it isn't raining.

My only complaint might be that she is a little on the loud side. Anyone have any input on modding these mufflers? Maybe using some grass pack?

That's a seriously nice bike! How's she riding?
Any more photos?
Concerning loud mufflers (not yours specifically) the most effective solution (keeping the looks) would be to fit a "quiet core". I've done this to my Tyga Maggot (obnoxiously loud at first, reasonable now) with an insert off a GSXR. You can make it removable too. Some welding/fab work may be required though.
Of course you could also fit a silencer at the end but that would seriously compromise your design. If that's not a problem for you (it would be for me) you could make your mufflers almost silent...

Nice work, she turned out great. I had emgo shorties on mine and they were too loud. So I stuck a BS lawnmower muffler in the end of each then drilled them out until I got just the right sound and back pressure, they were barely noticable but made the wife and neighbors happy.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, guys. I'll have to decide on something if anything... maybe just earplugs ::)

I like these EMGO mufflers but seriously..... ::)......... what is up with the packing?

I've been hanging onto this package of muffler packing for probably 10 years. Can't believe I'm using it.

Now I'm going to jam this back into the shell.

I just got back from a ride into town. It's a little better. Definately takes the edge off. Probably can live with it.

Well there's your noise right there! Hahaha oh boy.

Your bike is looking great, good job with the frame modifications!

I noticed you had mentioned using a "4 cell A123 Lithium bat" where did you end up ordering this battery from? I like how slim you electrical underseat box was and was just curious about the specs on that battery.

For those who are still interested in this build, here is an update.

The bike is running perfect. The only complaint would be is it still is a little loud. I might have to weld in a baffle.
But seriously I love it. And apparently so does everyone else. I can't park anywhere without poeple all over it. ;D

Any chance of BOTM?

If you know Lithium batteries then you know A123 makes the best. Below is what I ordered. It was overkill for my Cb200 and is just enough for my CM400. Unfortunately it tooks 2 mounths to arrive. You could also just order the cells from somewhere closer and make one yourself.

Awesome build man! I just did a CM400 also - better than stock, but you went all the way!

Thanks man, nothing like commuting in style! I checked out your build. Well done! It funny seeing someone else's build and them going through the similar complications with the same bike. ;D

I think that's the best thing about this forum - If you're working on a bike someone somewhere has had the same issue you are having an d found a work-around.

Talking of which - I have a question for you on the R1 fork conversion - was the R1 steering post the same length as the CM400? Meaning did the R1 triple trees and post fit directly on to the CM400 headset lengthways (I'm familiar with the All-Balls solution got the bearings bu it's the stem length I'm thinking about.
Thanks!

I think the R1 is a little shorter. Put it this way, when installed there was barely enough available threads for the nuts. Just enough to make a safe connection but I had to ditch a couple washers that came with the bearings.
