'81 SR250 trying to find a new battery

I am in need of a new battery for my slowly being rebuilt '81 SR250, I am looking at the antigravity and the ballistic batteries, does anyone have experience with either on this bike and if so which one works?

I used this Lithium battery in both my SR250 and XS400 projects. No problems so far. 8)

The earthX batteries we sell are the LiFePO4 type. Superior to most straight LI-ION varieties. Engineered and manufactured in the USA. They have have internal circuitry to protect from over charger and over discharging as well as an internal cell balancer. You do pay a bit more for these, though.

The ETX6A would be fine on your bike.

So I went with a 4 cell antigravity and ran my bike idle a few times worked great then I went to take it off out it back on it won't even start the lights. Went through all electric and no battery drains and now a multimeter is reading the battery at 7v ... Am I basically screwed

I'm trying to decide whether to try to send it back to get the warranty on it or if it's worth it or not if they just send it back... Anyone know if it'd be worth trying to charge it over maybe a car battery for 10-15 min or one of their chargers if that would even work? Or just try to send it back an cross my fingers

Yeah. 7V is dead on any 12V battery. Lead acid you can sometimes revive, but not LI-ION. It's toast.

That's what I figured, and I'm having a hard time understanding that running this on idle to cure my exhaust paint for about 30 mins all together would drain it that low when I have to places in the wiring it would drain. Do you think I should try to send it back under warranty or they'll just tell me to piss off? Also, that EarthX one you mentioned earlier... would the internals in that combat against this? Now I'm trying to figure out if a LiPo battery is even worth it if some accidental drain can waste 100$ + from running the bike for 30mins

They're usually pretty good about covering it under warranty, from what I hear.

And yeah, idling an old bike for 30 minutes can damage a lot more than the battery. A few minutes to warm up is about all you wanna do.

earthX does have over discharge protection, yes. If the battery gets to 9V or under, it shuts off until you recharge it.

Okay, well I'll try to send it in to warranty then go for that EarthX if they don't replace it for me. Hopefully they do considering I didn't even have the battery for a week.
Considering I don't have any places that would cause battery drain and my electric work is perfect, this over discharge was caused just by idling for so long you think?

Possible. The SRs are usually pretty good about generating enough voltage at idle, but the best way to test is with a multimeter. If you''re not at 12.9V (or better) at idle, then you're probably running off of battery power.

Gotcha, I wonder if Antigravity is going to tell me in out of luck because I let it discharge or give me a break. Hopefully the latter because I went through the time of fabricating and refitting a new box for it and moving a lot of the wiring around

I have this battery in my sr250 and it just survived a Canadian winter. Get that battery replaced under warranty for sure. A total discharge like that doesn't seem right.

Well this makes me feel better; I filled out the warranty claim stuff on their website, hoping to hear back from them soon. I used the VHT Flameproof paint on my Exhaust which I had cut the muffler off of to make it a straight pipe and I just ran it 10 mins idle, sat for 20 then 20 mins idle, sat for 20 then turned it off while I assembled the rest of my bike to get ready to ride and when I went to turn it on again turned the key and no power at all.

Before then it cranked great each time and I had just spent the previous two days going through every electrical connection on the bike to make sure it was solid and even replaced some old connections with new wires and connectors to make the connections better and also because I replaced the battery box with a custom one had to replace some wires with longer or shorter ones to reach where the battery was moved.

Do you use the stock regulator on your SR250?

Indeed I do. It's mounted right under the seat pan I made, directly in front of the carb trumpet. Electrically, my bike has been flawless. Amazing for a bike that's 35 years old.

Right? Mine was doing great with my old lead-acid battery until that had died and wouldn't recharge (I had for ~2+ years) and before I hooked up the antigravity it was working great with a buddies lead-acid bat.... hopefully this just means I got a dud battery from them or something as I can't see where my problem would be. There's no way it should totally discharge like that from idling though I do wonder if it would be different if I had ridden it.

I have a Ballistic 4 cell on mine, it goes alright but on the odd occasion I have had to roll start her.

I am very wary of not draining it to far though. If I was to replace it I would go with the EarthX and a new Reg/Rec.

If this doesn't end up working out, I will go ahead and get one of the earthX if those will shut off before any damage is done but I feel like the Antigravity should be okay with hearing a good amount of people having success with them on this bike after doing some research around the web... if I was to get a new reg/rec anyone know which one/what specs I'm looking for to buy ?

I have a kick start for cold stubborn days as a backup.

I do need to get around to installing one of those but I always see the guts for it being sold so expensive

I posted an In Search Of on my local Facebook dirtbike group and found an xt250 enthusiast who was fine parting out a blown motor. $50cdn later I was kicking it.

So now I'm getting an 8.9V reading off the battery after it's been sitting for a day or two, worth a try to charge off my car battery for 10-15 min or you think I should just warranty this thing
