Update...

I spent a couple hours tonight troubleshooting my headlight issue. The headlight wasn't working so I took apart the switch and traced every wire. I finally figured out that the relay was bad, a connector was corroded and I had a bad ground. Electrical is tedious work and sometimes I hate it... but when I figure it out I always get a good sense of accomplishment.

Anyways that's now fixed and my headlight is working perfect. I also got my brake lights and tail light working so that's good to go. Next up is turn signals and i'll be getting those soon. I think that's the last of my electrical bugs...

The other part of the night was spent on the brake fluid reservoir... the front disc brakes aren't working and I knew it had to be a fluid issue. The only problem was the screws that hold the cover on were stripped beyond recognition. So I did the only thing I could do and drilled them out. I cleaned out the reservoir, function checked it and i'll throw some new fluid in tomorrow. That should be it for the front brakes...

Another project was mounting the K&N air filter... since I deleted the air box, I had to come up with a custom way to mount it so I did that tonight as well. The filter needs to be cleaned and oiled but other than that it's good to go.

Oh and I took the speedo and tach off... It was too cluttered for me so I raised the headlight and i'll just use my iphone for the speedo. I will need to figure out a custom mount for that. I want it to sit in a specific location and they don't make anything so custom it will be.

Oh and I decided to go with different pegs.. the ones I made were just too small so I opted for some bigger ones and I'll put the ones I made on my little suzuki. They fit the small bike much better...

Quick little update... got the front brakes working so that's good. I have grips, carb rebuild kit, side cover, and exhaust wrap in the mail. It should all be showing up in the next few days. Once the carb kit and side cover get in i'll rebuild and clean the carbs, fill her with oil and attempt to get her started. I'm going to finish up the exhaust as soon as the wrap shows up and then that'll be done.

I'm going to do all the legal shit tomorrow.. title and registration etc.

So I've been thinking I'll run the stock wheels for now.. I think I'll be on the lookout for some clean spoke wheels and try this copper plating on them.. I think with the copper paint job, some of the copper accents I have planned and the copper spoke wheels it'll really finish out the bike.

Speaking of paint jobs... my brother who does all my painting is flying out to visit for the weekend and work on bikes and tattoo me. He's a fantastic tattoo artist and artist in general. He's really lucky to be able to tattoo and paint for a living. He makes very good money custom painting bikes and tattooing and his art sells for big bucks. Anyways we will go over the paint job for this bike while he's here, and then it's pretty much 4 days of non-stop tattooing for my wife and I. Here's the latest and final paint for his R6... All carbon fiber with blue accents, he even did a matching helmet and put them both up for sale as a package. He's gonna pick up the 2014 KTM RC390 when it comes out. I'll post a pic of that too if you haven't seen it. I love the bike and am gonna try and get one myself...

sorry about the shitty cell pic.. it's just the pic he texted me.

and the new KTM RC390... I must have this bike...

Just got done working out some electrical mods, I decided that I did not want the battery in the stock location with that goofy cover.. so I put it in the seat bump. I still have to make the battery box/holder and mount it but the electrical is done. I had to extend a few wires and fix some things the PO had done poorly. It was funny cause there was a splice wrapped in duct tape and I thought it was gonna be some twisted half-ass splice but to my surprise it was a proper soldered splice... crazy that they would splice it right but wrap it in duct tape... it's fixed now.

So I have a question.. the ground that goes to the engine.. does it need to ground to the engine or can I just ground to the frame?

TYR /XVs all suffer from poor grounds - just make sure whichever way you go, the ground is good.

BTW - that KTM colourway is one I'm seriously looking at for my BMW Kay Streetfighter

Thanks

I finished up the wiring and got everything where it needs to be. I got the battery tray in the subframe zip-tied and epoxied. Once the epoxy is cured I'll get the battery installed and that should be it for the electrical. I do need to figure out a new mount for the rear brake switch... since I got rid of the tray part of that was losing the mount for the switch. So that'll need to be addressed but I have an idea...

My new sidecover came in... I don't know if I mentioned but I over torqued one of the bolts and it snapped the side cover. I ordered one and a new gasket so they are in and ready to go on.

Gotta finish the exhaust as well... still waiting on the wrap to come in...

I'll get back to it soon... need to get some homework done first.

Well to update this thread my bike is complete and running. Fires up first click every time.... I'm going to be driving to Colorado in a few weeks and i'll bring the tank and whatnot with me to have my brother paint it. Then it's just adding the vinyl and taking the bike in to have the carbs sync'd and tuned.

On another note my brother has started to build bikes.. he just wrapped up his first cafe. Its a 81 SR250....

He's picking up project #2 tomorrow.. 81 DT175. I'll post some pics of it when he finishes it...

Oh and I did relocate the battery to underneath the seat bump. I re-worked a lot of the wiring and had to replace some relays but it's all straightened out. No more ugly side covers...

Did your brother just straight up cut the back of that off?

Just updating this thread... It's been a while but I've got the paint done... I'm ordering a seat from dime city soon. Once the seat is on and a new battery installed I'll have the carbs sync'd and tuned. It's almost ready to ride. I'll keep updating this bike and adding more to it. It won't ever be finished.

So I decided to strip the tank down to bare metal, hit it with a flap wheel and sprayed it with some really expensive/quality clear. I really like the unfinished look of steel. So I went with it...

My wife found this seat at a thrift shop for $2... I had a bunch of scrap steel and rod so I started experimenting with a webbed seat. It's been fun and it's kinda cool.. I'm still going to use a dime city seat but this setup cost me less than $10 and kept me busy the last 2 days. I'll clear it and have a second seat option I think...
