Nice bike. I cant wait to see it come together so get to work.I noticed the pics on the walls in the pics whats the story there. I see a colorado race truck and an rx7 are they yours?

Hey, I'm working on the bike as fast as I can... within limits.

The pictures are from some of my track cars from the last 15 years. I've been a road racing instructor as a hobby since 1995 doing events all over the east from Mont Tremblant to Florida to my Houston home.

Oldest is the RX7 that I converted to a track car in 1995. Built motor and trans, T-10 turbo, 355 rwhp, 2750 lbs with me in it, full cage, race slicks. Really a great car I built after stripping it to bare metal.

This is Turn 1 at Mosport outside Toronto...

These are a couple of shots from when I had the cage built. Left the stock gauge cluster in, but everything else is fabbed. The hula girl was an early verion of a G-meter. It was hilarious to see her lean in the turns.

I sold that car in 2004 and went into an East Coast Pro Truck. This is a road racing series in the Northeast. The chassis are symmetrical and weight distribution is 50/50. They weigh about 2100 lbs dry. My truck had a 5-Start body, custom front suspension, worked over ZZ4, Jericho 4 speed and quick change rear end. It was really fun to chase down Porsches and Ferraris in that thing. It still runs the Watkins Glen area as I sold it to a guy in Vermont when I stopped instructing to run Bonneville for a few years.

Now, I'm building this bike which I'd like to run at Bonneville Speed Weeks in 2011.

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

Worked on my tail section detailing this weekend.
I glassed it up last week and started finishing with filler and rough sanding.
Have I mentioned I hate bodywork?
I've done too much in my life and now it is like getting a root canal.

Anyway, this is where I got to.
Remember, it is going to sit on a .125" aluminum panel, so I used cardboard to set the underseat clearance properly.
I trimmed the rear frame horns as you can see.

Sunday, I began learning a new skill set: Spoke lacing.
I have new stainless spokes on the way from Buchanan's, so I started by taking pictures of my wheels and removing the spokes.

Hey, what can happen? :D

I'll take my rims to the powdercoater and detail my hubs before assembly, of course.

Looks damn fine from where I sit. I understand on the body work, although I have only just done enough to know I don't like it.

You gonna put lights in those frame tubes?

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

Cool thanks for the info on the cars. Body work is coming along nicely. keep it up.

No, I'm simply going to put plugs in the tubes.

Turn signals are still not decided, but the taillight will be one round 2.125 diameter dual filament.
License will mount below with lighted bolts to shine down.

Yeah, steady as she goes.
I'm doing that in small sessions to keep from farming it out. :D

I like what you're doing with the seat. It's looking good.

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

Been working on my hubs getting them ready for painting before re-lacing my wheels with spokes from Buchanan's.

This is the relative grime level I am dealing with here.

This is the result of many hours work.
I also drilled some steampunk style 'cooling' holes in the rear backing plate.
I am being amazed at how crude many of these casting are compared to new technology.
Lots of neat imperfections in the surfaces.

Next up is black epoxy paint and new bearing and seals.

Very cool build. In one of the early posts you said you were going with a fairing. Any idea what your using?

Thanks.
Like most projects, things change as you go as reality and resources smacks you in the head.
Right now, I am building without a faring.

But... I want to add a Ducati 900 SS style half fairing in the future.

Recent work...

Took parts (rims and various brackets) to powdercoat Friday.
Frame to follow this week.

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

Started epoxy painting my hubs while my frame and rims are at powdercoat.
Here are two of the parts.

Got all new bearings, seals, drive bushings, etc. to go in.
PLUS, I get to learn how to lace and true my wheels.

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

Update on my project: Frame, side stand, rims, triple clamps, various brackets still at powdercoater until I get back from a trip to North Carolina the 18th.

Took forks to Metric Motorcycles in Houston for installation of new seals, etc. and RaceTech valve emulators and RaceTech springs. Had to get new fork tubes from Franks's Forks sent down as my old ones were pretty scored up and I hate installing good upgrades in marginal tubes.

Damn bike can be a money pit, but I'm very happy with where it is going.

cheers,
brad

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

Got back from the Smokies and got my parts back from the powdercoater today.
Now, I can start actually building a roller.

The rims are actually Honda Red or a tad darker than that.
My iphone camera has a red shift that makes them look a bit orange, but they aren't.

cheers,
brad

very very cool. keep it up!

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

love the fact that your doing a dohc cafe. I think thats what my next will be. Looks great so far! keep up the good work :) I laced my own wheels for the first time, but I didn't trust myself to true them, I just had it done while the tires were being mounted. Something to think about ;)

Re: 1982 Honda cb750k cafe • Dresda style boxed swingarm

With regards to an earlier post and the pod filters you have...
the stock CV carbs are a royal pain to tune with pod filters or velocity stacks.
You'll get far better performance from a rack of VM series Mikunis (for cheap) or Keihin FSR flat slides (for more expensive). If you're dead set on the stock (or any CV) carbs you'll need to provide a bit of restriction to allow the vacuum operated slides to function so the stock airbox is a cheap and functional method.
I like your work man, good stuff!

DBC- thanks. A good friend owns a bicycle shop so truing the wheels will be no problem. I measured hub offsets before I took them apart, so I can recreate that measurement, too.

Swagger- After reading about tuning issues with stock carbs, my plans have changed. I'm going to fab an airbox for the stock carbs for the short term. I'm trying to focus on getting my rolling chassis up before I turn to the engine rebuild. I'd love to get away from the CV carbs, but there is a budget on this crap. :)

cheers,
brad

I totally understand the vagaries of being restricted to a budget....
sounds like a good plan.

I keep stretching the damn budget it seems.
Currently adding RaceTech valve emulators and springs to the front end along with new tubes from Franks.
Every time I start rebuilding a component, I end up buying parts.

The bike's name should be "While you are in there..." :)
