Re: RotaryDane's Norton Interpol 2

Nice work on an interesting bike, I am in. Keep the images coming in.

Re: RotaryDane's Norton Interpol 2

Very nice my friend. You are going to have one unique little scoot.

Re: RotaryDane's Norton Interpol 2

Tank and seat shapes are looking good. What state is the engine in and is the cylinder plating still in good condition? Is it still possible to get tip seals and gaskets etc for that motor or is that going to be a huge PIA to get the motor and transmission working properly?

Frankly.. I don't know what state the seals or end plates are in (and don't worry about the center plate coating that stuff never fails) but since the engine turns over almost effortles on the flywheel I gather that it is OK. Am just debating myself wether or not to get the engine moly coated right away or just go with new seals and springs..

Heres a pic of a F1 engine with molybdenum

CIMG1968.JPG

Borrowed from the Rotary Owners Club

It is basically a track ground out of the end wall and filled with Molybdenum metal which will keep the side pin and main seal edges riding smoothly. A 100,000 mile garanty more or less.

That's me in one mirror hiding behind the camera and my girls cats ass in the other, you decide which is which.
Aficionados might recognize a treat. (Since returned due to budget constraints.)

Re: RotaryDane's Norton Interpol 2 - West systems epoxy 101

So.. really figured I would have had alot more done by now.

Did wax down all the basic parts ready for glassing over, tried the 5:1 mix needed (five parts resin to one part hardener as by the manufactorers orders) on a flat piece of plastic laying up 4 layers to check thickness and rigidity (didn't bother much about mixing correctly, just went with it roughly)
The damn thing didn't harden ever, just stayed sticky like phuck so did the stupidest thing I could and starting laying up 'glass on the seat and one side cover, 24 hours later nothing still a sticky mess so scouered the internet for advice. Suspected the fact that I've got West systems 206 hardener for longer layup time (which wont cure below 16 degrees C it being slightly cold right about now on these parts but found that mixing was and is the number one reason and on the tin it said more or less in illustrated form: "If using the pump kit, use one pump resin to one pump hardener" The resin pump being much larger than the hardener.
A facepalm and a laugh later did what I could and peeled off the sticky resin goo and fiberglass mix from the molds, taking the masking tape with it thankful that I hadn't just poored the stuff straight onto the foam.

Just goes to show; read the tin and get it right the first time.

Because of a tropical hurricane passing up the atlantic DK is getting pretty nice weather and 20 degrees C these next few days, so am gonna slam ahead and hit a chunk out of the fiberglas work focussing on the main parts, tank, seat and side covers.

Re: RotaryDane's Norton Interpol 2

I thought that epoxy resin doesn't dissolve the polyester in chopped strand mat - or you using all woven cloth? I just use poyester or vinylester resin and then seal a tank with a Caswell resin.

Re: RotaryDane's Norton Interpol 2

I'm using 280g Twill woven cloth drapes really nice and when hardened doesnt need that much working over to look nice. Main reason for choosing epoxy was the fumes, epoxy hardly smells and Polyester fumes just got past your breathguard no matter what.

And epoxy is way stronger.

Crazy

That it is!

Did a bit of work yesterday reducing the bike to its constituent parts.

27 year old bolts really get stuck on frustratingly well..
But it is very nice to just be able to hinge the frame off the engine makes things alot easier though it weighs just shy of 70 kgs - not the easiest porker to budge around.
