920rh 'Special'

TD - you have my complete understanding. ;)

EIGHT years ago I bought a BMW K100 with a view to making a 60's style [ there I go again ] Cafe Racer. I decided that just wouldn't look right [ watercooled for one ], then hmmmm, maybe a modern Race Rep. Got well into that one when BMW brought out the S1000R - which just so happened to have the same R6 fairing [ for prototype work ] and it was then that I realised it didn't matter WHAT I did with a faired Race Rep - they were ALL going to look the same as every other fucker out there [ 'ish ].

Then lightbulb time - a Fighter, and yes it IS nearly finished, nearly 9 years later ! ;D

The Vindicator CR has progressed RAPIDLY [ by my standards ] - now only 18 months. Main problem is lack of cash [ cue violins ] but also the lack of suitable workspace. However, I do have 99% of the parts I need to finish it. Just need the funds for the aforementioned powder coating, polishing, passivating.

Of course what I SHOULD have done - was get the garage sorted first !! ::)

I finally decided [ after working in the dark / cold / snow ] for the first few months of this year, to finish the garage. After waiting for the invisible mates - "yes, I've got some flourescent fittings - they're yours" - and other arseholes, I bit the bullet and used £33 [ [$50 ?] of my powder coating money to get 2 new 5' units [ good old E-Bay ]. A good friend [ REAL one ] has volunteered to come round and help me make up a power take-off board and lay the wiring for sockets and the lights.

Then it's a simple matter of a 4 metre waterproof extension lead to go from the garden BBQ sockets to the end of the garden - and THEN just a flylead [ 3 metre ] between power board and extension across the private road to the garage building.

I admire the enthusiasm of youth when I watch a complete build on these pages take place in a couple of months - some have access and skill to make their own parts as required, but never the less they get built quickly and to a high degree of workmanship. What is sad - is that I used to be those boys. Cafe Racer in a weekend ! 8)

So my schedule is looking like -

BMW Kay Fighter - late Summer
"Vindicator" [TR1 60' style Cafe Racer] - Autumn 'ish.
KZ750 Flat Tracker - could be mid Summer.
GS450 Part Chaser Flat Tracker - again mainly needs work rather than cash - maybe late Summer
"Cafe Cream" Boardtracker [ TR1 based ] - fuck knows - next year sometime and maybe with sidecar.
Max Deubel Sitter sidecar homage - hopefully before I die.

WARNING - do not hold your breath .................................. ::)

Did I mention I used to play with American Muscle cars / Rods - well my business actually, as well as a hobby.

There's a very unreasonable part of my brain saying " One last Rod - TJ".
1958 -60 Rover P4 [ "Auntie" Rover ] - 3.5 Rover [ nee Buick 215ci ] V8, autobox, Minilite wheels. resto-Rod style with Aston Martin Sage Green paintwork.

Not much of note worth reporting unfortunately. I've picked at the wiring a bit however keeping myself afloat has taken precedence of late. By the end of the day I don't have much heart left for the work needed though I really need to get this piglet on the road. I'm awaiting a battery tray (because I haven't the time to fab one..yay) and then I should be able to wrap up the last of it for now. Still slated is a conversion to wire wheels...but of course I have to find the inspiration to go forth and that's been lacking lately. I'm sure eventually I'll move on it.....

Swagger, Thanks to you I'm now planning on something similar for my build. M-unit (also m-lock, m-button), LiFE, new cable, weatherpac etc

I can't figure out Yamaha's earthing no matter what - it's all over the place - sometimes shared, sometimes separate, sometimes direct to the frame, sometimes not.

Can you please tell me more about your earth bus you mentioned. Is this just a big hunk of cable running end to end with a lot of little fly leads coming off it? Is there anything that shouldn't plug into this?
What gauge are you using? and will it be bundled up with the other wires, or left completely separate?

Hi Roro
Yes, I do believe the electrical ninjas at Yamaha were smoking something entertaining on the job.

The ground bus is really just a section of brass stock that I drilled and tapped for screw terminals and connected to the negative terminal on the battery via a 10g cable. I mounted the buss just ahead of the M-unit on the electronics tray. This all being said.....

The 920 has been bumped back to 'planning' stage again. Since my last update I started a new job that is allowing me to 'go a little bigger' on the build.
So I will! I've been picking up some choice parts for it and refining the visual direction of the project. However I have the SV to tart up and another project car that I need to get after so....plate's full.

There's a great bare bones step bu step diagram in the electrical section of the Virago Tech Forum - and I have done basically what Swagger did to deal with the ground issues.

Glad to hear about the new job Swagger. Hope you're havin' fun.

Swagger, got to keep food on the table etc first. Hope you get some bike time soon to keep yourself sane. Cheers.

Thanks fellas, it's a good gig. I'm employed as an aerospace machinist which pleases me immensely as i taught myself the skills to get hired and qualify for this work.
That being said, it's also immensely mentally taxing, a machinist is part physicist, part surgeon and part blunt force trauma. I call on more mostly forgotten math than I would have ever considered part of my future, I've cultivated a new set of 'supplementary' skills in addition to refining the ones I brought with me. Like I said, it's a good gig and they pay ok.

There's more, I should probably write a post in the general section....stay tuned.

Lee,

good to see that your recent employment status has put you in a good place - everything seems positive !

Pat .................. 2014 looks doable for my Vindicator - even with this year being a virtual write-off [ workwise ].

You do realise [ all of you ] that in the not too distant future - there will be a whole rash of TR1 / XVs hitting the road - AND NO TWO WILL BE THE SAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TJ: You are, as usual right on all counts.

Rich Ard: Hah! Like 20 tin buckets full of rocks? That is unless a good starter solution is found.....

Hiya Pal, long time no talk, sorry I've been out of the loop for a bit. I will bring everyone up to speed over in the lounge.......

I stumbled across this thread and was as gitty as school girl till near the end found out the build died...

After just finishing my simplified harness on my tr1 this thread had some eye opening options which will help future builds.

Oh definitely not dead, just moved back a bit. In the end, the bike that results will be significantly cooler, lighter, faster etc....

A dead build to me is one that had momentum then lost momentum and involving a hiatus in the build part way through the adventure. A lesson learned myself it only good to build one bike at a time, if it can be helped. ;)

But the harness stuff in this thread was a great learn for me. The timing is a bit bad after I just spent 2 weekends doing it the old fashioned way but I learned a lot through that so picking up any of these harness solutions and installing it will be a piece of cake.

I also liked the idea on the swing arms that only require a mount for the lower linkage.
