Been Around the Block
Hi everyone,

I have been stalking the page during the day and wanted to introduce myself.
I'm totally new to this and is about to start with a KZ650 LDT which I am going to start with slowly to understand the project. About to change seat, steering etc. and am very interested of assistance possible for the seat which is my biggest concern. Hopefully this will be a great experience!

Where ya from?
Welcome.

Post up a picture of your bike an maybe we can be more helpful with the seat

Thanks!
From Stockholm, Sweden!

The bike as mentioned is a KZ650 with about 40000km on it. Picture is attached.
What I'd like to get it to is something like the following pic.

Thats a nice looking bike to start with,

Thanks! Hopefully it will treat me well.
Yes, the frame is a bit curved, but mostly at the end. Will take picture asap and post. I'm thinking of cutting the end where it is curved just to make it easy. Don't have a welder so might have to fix that also.

Now some pics on the seat and handlebar. I'm hoping that it's possible to cut the seat down to something like the pic above (grey bike), and change the handlebar as well as gauges. Got some ideas for the seat?

And also, someone got knowledge if there should be dimpled or non dimpled handlebars? Thinking of this ex: http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-handlebars-biltwell-black-tracker-handlebars-hb-trd-01-bk.html

The seat measures 18,5 cm at the tank, 21 cm over the bat. and 24 cm at its widest. I'm thinking of shortening it about 7-10cm by cutting of the part where the fender is mounted, and move the end closer to the tank. This requires a change of the seat and maybe a new seat I guess though and not only cutting in the original.. You think that would be suitable?

I am currently working on a 1984 Kawasaki KZ550 LTD shaft drive. As far as your sweat is concerned. The best way I have found is to take a piece of sheet metal, cut the shape of the frame where you want the seat mounted, and start building your seat from there. I personally would not use parts of the original seat, just in case you need the seat later.

Yeah, seems like the best way of doing it. Might be good to have the original left. Have to try so that the wheel won't touch the bottom also.

Also, one question. I am unsure what size of air filter I should use. I am thinking 28, or 39 mm. cone vents. Would you know regular sizes regarding this?

Have been thinking for some time and now I think I have decided to go with fiber glass instead of a metal pan. Mostly because it's easer to form it like the frame I have now. I'm thinking about glassing it as it is, having less foam in the back and more in the front to have the same level.

Maybe later I'll cut the frame and make it shorter and thereafter cut down the foam and pan as well... But I'm thinking about starting with the size it has got now.

1: Frame as now
2: Seat that I want
3 & 4: How I'm thinking of making it (you think it's possible to have less foam at the back and more in front?) I mean. I will sit at the front...

Thanks!!

that should work my friend. you can add or take off as much foam as you want to get the look your after. comfort for a passenger on the other hand may not be to much. lol
