A CL360 and a dummy

I just got a 74 CL360 it was getting power the ignition was really loose so I replaced it. It helped at first but still wouldnt start. Then I took the carb and tank off and cleaned both put them back on turned the key and nothing. No lights starter button does nothing main, fuse looks good still replaced it though. Still nothing I'm taking the battery to get tested today. Any suggestions I replaced the fuse with an extra one in the fuse box I don't know how old it is should I try a new fuse?

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

If you own a vintage bike you should also own a multimeter, which you would use to find the source of the problem.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

I was hoping to avoid electrical problems. I will put that on my shopping list, thanks.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

yes check the fuses
multi meter is handy , but, get a circuit test light ,learn to use it, it is a better, more well suited tool for the job of finding electrical faults

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

I have the battery on a charger at advanced auto parts which is free. We will see how that works. I will look in to picking up both of those tools. Fixing the carbs got a little pricy so I'm hoping this works. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Hmmm, well, the continuity check setting on a multimeter does the same thing as a test light.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Listen to the man! He had electrical problems. Even after cleaning the tank and carb, the problem is not solved.

I rest my case.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Seriously, get a manual. Look up the wiring diagram part. Make yourself comfortable with it. Trace down all the wires you think (looking af the diagram) need power.

First rule of electrics : assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups. Be sure. Only way to be sure is, like said before, using a multimeter.

Red wire is always live, black wire is live when ignition is switched. So is black/white. It could be anything from a corroded plug to a broken wire or something in between. Impossible to diagnose over the internet. You're there, fix it ;)

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Charged the battery still nothing, worst of all the girlfriend is dragging me to a concert tonight so I cant get any work done. I have the manual I just need to buy/learn how to use a multimeter. I know little about turning a wrench and even less about electrical.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Back up a step. Did you say that you replaced the ignition switch? If so, that may be the problem. Multimeters are cheap and yes, cheap ones are not as accurate as good ones, but all we need to know is are those pesky electrons making their way from the battery to where they have to go and if not, where are they stuck.

Buy a cheap multi meter, but today you can use a 12v bulb in a bulb holder and two crocodile clips. Total cost less than 5 dollars to see if you have power at any point along the way. If you need to probe a connector, use a big paper clip or trim nail. This stuff is really easy although it looks complicated.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

skip the multi meter for now you don't need it, it just confuses things
a circuit test light with a sharp ass probe is the right tool and like teaser said you can make one or buy one fer $5 or so

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Yep I replaced the ignition switch but it worked well at first (I got power to the lights, and electric start, engine would rev but not turn over) then I came back to it a day or two later and nothing.

I like the light bulb idea I think I have a lamp sitting around that would like to donate its guts to helping.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

You will need to use a 12v bulb, not a regular house bulb. Check the plug for your ignition switch to make sure it hasn't come loose. Do you have the stock fuse holder? Mine had disintegrated so I replaced it with a modern blade type. Just tossing out ideas for what may be the problem.

Also, you can find your wiring diagram here:

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

I still have the original fuse holder with the glass tubes it actually looks like its in good shape. Thanks for the diagram, 12v bulb check. I am reading thru the pinned post "read this first" and "read this second"

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Haha so for all your guy's help I am going to let you laugh at me more. The cluster of wires that go to the ignition switch were not hooked up to the starter magnetic switch. They were probably loose for a long time and me dicking with the bike disconnected them. I probably didn't need the new ignition switch to begin with. It turns on now I still can't get the engine to turn over though, I think I need to re-adjust my floats.

If you would like to laugh at me more I'm sure I'll be posting under engine tomorrow.
Thanks again for your help. Can't wait to get my first bike on the road!

Eeehh... If you're not using the right words, how can we help you?

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

Dont touch the floats. Assumption is the mother of all fuckups. Only change shit when you KNOW FO SHO its wrong. Youll only make it worse..

1. Check for spark. Disconnent plug wire from boot and hold its core end close (3mm) to the engine. Turn the bike over. Spark? If yes, step 2. If no, step 3

2. startpilot/brake cleaner/deodorant into the carb intakes. That'll do the trick

3. Check power to coils. There is a black/white wire going into your coils. Put a light between the wire and frame and turn ignition on. Light? Step 4. no light? Step 5.

4. Now that your coil gets power, check the points. The coil needs to release the power at tdc and the points tell the coil when that is.

5. Find out why theres no power on black/white.

Report findings. I subscribed.

Re: Nothing happens when I turn my key.

When I took the carb apart the floats were very far from even to each other. I'm probably not using the right words I'm sorry, this is a whole new world for me .
