A letter to my local metal shop...

The old brick or concrete block (if you are lucky rock) corner gas stations with the twin bays and the big awning in front, always seemed to me to be the best places to modify into a home.
If you want to make the trip (all the way to the next state ;) ) over the Holidays, I will learn you some welding. Mig and/or stick, I don't have a tig yet. And I haven't learned gas welding yet. :)
Plus we will feed you well.

I got lucky a few years ago. I asked around at the local small independent bike shops wher to get machining and welding done to a high standard. Someone recommended a small welding shop and that guy was super cool. He sure as heck knew how to weld and insisted that I tell him what I wanted to avoid screw ups. He pointed me to the machine shop guy he works with and I still use that machine shop 15 years later. The welder retired and I had to find another, but the new guy is also a total pro - when he's available.

I bought an Oxy acetylene welding set and I usually tack up the parts and then take them over to the pro to TIG them properly. If it's something simple and not structural I'll weld it myself but my welds look like pigeon poop to be honest.

Angle grinding is easy but sometimes I need to ask the welder where he wants me to cut something so that it's easiest for him to weld and then I cut and fit the parts. Just remember to wear gloves and eye protection - all the time.

Live/Work space with concrete floors and a garage door as the main entrance is what I dream about on a daily basis

If you know the movie I'm referring to. He had a shooting range in there too

At least I'm not the only one!
Although currently I've got a pretty sick setup.
5000 sqft bike/car/truck shop on one side, walk through a door into my 1800 sqft apt and then through another door into my 5000 sqft wood shop.

If you ask nice I'll room with you

I can understand the problem with local shops doing work for you. You know in your mind what you want but a shop that deals with all kinds of fabrication doesn't necessarily share your vision. I have a chunk ( 10" x 2 1/2") aluminum that is going to become a sidecar wheel for my LSR sidecar in the next month or so. If I take it to a machine shop I can't expect the machinist to know what I want. So I would have to provide a detailed dimensional drawing so he knows what I want. I don't own a lathe but a friend does. So I will machine it at his place (if he's ever stop wasting time fishing and come home). I'll do a drawing so I know what I want to do and do't screw it up. I'm not a machinist so I take about ten times as long as someone who does machining for a living. What does piss me off is when you are told a week or ten days and it will be ready and you wind up trudging back and forth for the next two months in the vain hope its ready.

When I was in Ireland I had a friend who is the nicest guy in the world with the best of intentions but if you wanted something machine or welded you had to move in with him and live with him and hound him if you wanted it done within your timeframe. Like I said, the nicest guy in the world. Impossible to get mad at but absolutely no idea of time management.

A friend of mine in Denmark recently moved into this. It presumably by now is home and a workshop. Leaves me a touch jealous. My "workshop" is an overcrowded garage full of shit I can't throw out and everything the wife doesn't want in the house. Thats not a complaint. Merely a statement. Its way ahead of some of the shit I've had that passed as a "workshop".

Hoof, I really like that gold flake epoxy floor! Thanks for the video, I may have to do something similar now. :)

Since I was 14 years old, I've been into modifying vehicles. Since the age of 20 I've turned to modifying and restoring/repairing motorcycles. More specifically Suzuki GS bikes from the mid to late 70's thru the late to early 90's. We work on them as a family. I was a computer programmer and website designer starting at 16 for local businesses but had previously started on my own work and projects since 13/14. I can specifically remember starting with a DOS based 286, 386, and 486 machines, learning to program basic functions in QBasic, Pascal, etc. and moved to Delphi, C+/VB throughout the changes in windows from 3.1 to around millennium/XP. During this time, I was literally throwing away money to local 'welders/fabricators' but was never really completely satisfied with most jobs. As I continued to get more into modifying vehicles to the extent of highly modified chassis work and suspension such as air ride/hydraulics, etc., I realized I just couldn't really trust the local welders when it came to having airbags on a 4000lb truck. This is your life and others on the road near you that you have to keep in mind when you modify vehicles and bikes to extreme extents like this. So when the economy started to crash in 07/08, I lost my job as an IT person, and decided screw it, i'll change careers. 4 years later and i'm now a fully certified combination welder in MIG/TIG/Stick welding as well as oxy/ace, etc. I now do all my own fabrication and welding so that I KNOW when I finish a bike or work on a vehicle, I'm confident it will be safe and strong. Self-confidence in work like this is much more valuable on the conscious than having to trust someone you don't really know.

With all that said, I am NOT trying to plug my self as I don't currently really advertise any of the work I do. But... If ANYONE in the state of Tennessee or within driving distance would like welding or fabrication work done, please feel free to contact me. I have all of my own welding and fabrication equipment and also offer that I can TIG weld aluminum and other metals. I would be glad to let anyone interested in having work done watch and learn as I am building. I am a strong believer in skillsets such as this, and it saddens me we are losing the number of trust-able welders and fabricators day by day. I am also open to having pictures sent or questions asked concerning a repair or project you have, and will give any insight or knowledge on how I would approach said project or repair so that you can know where to go or who to ask to help you with a project.

Best of luck to those who have been taken advantage of. This alone is a specific reason in why I changed careers. I get tired, frustrated, and honestly a bit saddened at times when I hear such horror stories of people having your projects for weeks at a time or for doing shoddy unsafe work. I do not believe in this. I handle each person I help one customer at a time.(1CAAT) I also am not in this business to become rich. I simply hope that in the end, throughout my career of doing work like this, that I can make enough money to pay rent and eat as well as to hopefully pass down inspiration for others to be confident enough to decide to pickup skills like these. Those of us who have a passion for this type of work also know that we are responsible for helping and motivating others in pursuing and keeping jobs and work like this available to people.

Chimera where are you located?

I am located in Eastern Tennessee. We live literally 3 miles from the 'famous' 129 Dragon - 318 curves in 11 miles for anyone who hasn't heard of it before. More specifically we are located in Blount County, TN, which is about 30 minutes outside of the larger city of Knoxville.

[/quote]I have/had a similar situation. This is my 2.5 car garage with 12 ft ceilings. I built an 8ft deep loft across the front in order to claim the floor space from my fiance. :) If you have the height I recommend it. I also built a 12x20 storage shed out back which is nearly full and house a couple more bikes and lots of parts. When we moved in together we had to combine two three bedroom houses into one. I call it hurricane proof, on account of all the weight. :)
