So I recently bought a sand blaster for some paint prep work. Got some glass bead media with it. Went through 25 lbs pretty quick and it worked ok, but didn't get all the rust.
I took a break and had a bit of an idea. Granulated sugar has about the same consistency as the glass media. I did a google search to see if anyone had tried this, but didn't find anything saying it was a bad idea, so i ran 5 lbs thought the blaster.
It worked really well! Took the paint and rust off. Just had to rinse the part in water afterwards.
It might work pretty good as a media, but it could probably wreak havoc on the blaster. Any moisture in the lines could end up creating a "syrup" residue in the blaster.
Also, if you went through the glass bead so quick, you probably had the pressure up too high.
Glass bead will not etch the surface and should only be used at 60 PSI from memory.
If you use it at those pressures it should be good for about 25 passes.
If you went through heaps and it took the rust off ok, you were blasting at too high a pressure and the glass was smashing and breaking up into little jagged bits.
Just use granite to take rust and paint off. It's pretty cheap!
Yeah, I've put about 50lbs of sugar through it so far. It clogged up a bit about 3/4 of the way through, but I just cleared it out with a wire, and it was good to go again.
Took my repirator off after blasting for a few minutes and noticed the air tasted sweet
It's a lot easier to clean up than the glass or sand.
Well you think it is easier, but what you have done is misted your workspace in a VERY FINE layer of sugar... as soon as you get a little moisture your whole shop will become a bit sticky... I also hope your area doesn't have a problem with ants during the summer as that could be a mess.
NO WAY!!!! i would never run that in a blaster, moisture will get in your lines no matter how many dryers or moisture catches would be in the line, that will ruin your blast cabinet for that to crystalize and turn to suryup in there, not to mention that is not good for your nozel man.
If you're using the $50 mod thread blasting setup (suction air gun) then go ahead. If using proper equipment, then these guys are the ones to listen to.
Plus, you could be using that sugar for a spirit wash.
