Get a manual (download from the interweb) and go step by step through the tune up process.

I have. Several times. Do you use a timing light for doing your timing?
Everything checks out great and then as soon as I get it on the road at around 40mph it shits the bed.

If everything in the motor checks out have you looked into carbs?

What's your intake and exhaust setup? Did you rejet the carburetors? Have you done a plug chop?

A timing light is best yeah, but you can get close enough without it.

if the motor is turning 9000 then it's fine. The problem is in transfering the power. I'm not familiar with these transmissionsbut ,is it possible he put the gears in the wrong places? Or as previously stated, clutch slip.

Ah this is true!
I got dragged down in the details.
I defer to my previous statement: clutch slip.

no

Possibly.

Anyway, this is the kinda shit that drive me nuts.

Duder,
DATA

GIVE US DATA FUCKER

Whats been done? (meaning, what have you done? Doesnt matter what the PO told you has bben done, what have you done?)

Whats different than stock?

What are the ACTUAL PROBLEMS, with REAL DATA?

We clear?

What is plug chop? Intake is Kehin carbs, exhaust is the stock cl350 high exhaust. Would putting the gears in wrong be the problem?

putting the gears in wrong is impossible
did you test ride and apply the brakes as i instructed? this will ABSOLUTELY verify if your clutch is slipping

Intake means carbs AND filters/stacks/etc...

Is the stocknairbox in place or are you using aftermarket bits? Seriously.
WE NEED ALL THE INFO.

Stock everything, but pistons, cam chain tensioner, cam chain, and tires. The tires are the Firestone ones from dime city. When I say stock i mean stock, I replaced what was bad with stock replacement exept the stuff I noted. It is a 1972 Cl350 with 1mm oversize pistons and 0.25 rings

When I ride the bike I usually take it to work and that is 30 miles away and the speed is 55 mph the whole way.

Ok... Ill say it... Those tires on stock wheels is a recipe for disaster. How did you get the front to fit with a fender?

If you're running 1mm over pistons with .25 over rings, that's definitely not helping. Your compression numbers would be low.

No one has asked about oil... What oil are you using? Because if you put synthetic in there those old clutches won't work, the oil is literally too slick. You should be using regular old dinosaur goo. Retells, pensoil, 30w-10 is good for temperate climates. Thinner if you ride in cold weather and thicker if you live in the dirty South or down under.

Also, chances are it probably is your clutch. Did you change the springs in the clutch? If not, I would. They are about 40 buck and it may be your issue. Most clutches from what I know slip in the higher rpm range.

And I concur with the tires.. Sell them to some hippie and get you some nice road tires to go to work. You're on that thing twice a day 5 times a week. Get some nice shoes. There's a reason NBA players don't wear velcro specials from k-mart..
