ACE 50 - Intro and need help

Update:

Received 2nd package from OORacing. Installed new CDI, spark plug. and cover. Removed EGW gear by blocking off manifold tap with a rubber hose and clamps.

It basically created a cat bypass with a hose(as the 50cc has a hose tap into the header). With just the above, the mid range is now more 'torquey'. Top speed has no change. I believe it's breathing more easilly and sounds better..

Anyone in SA able to offer help and advice on installing a big bore kit? My confidence is still a little lacking but i'm going to give it a go but will require some assistance.. ;D

Bongo,

Have you received your kit from OO yet? How was it to install?

Well, I'm stuck.

The 50cc head is a different config than the 125cc. I'm stuck with trying to figure out how to remove the 3 bolts from the cam gear. It keeps rotating even when I'm holding the kick start so I can even gold it at top dead..

Edit: all good. FB solved it. Used an impact wrench as per their advice.

Big bore install all done. Had to remove the engine off the frame. Cleaned the chain, drained the oil and replaced with Castrol 10w. Clutch is better than before. The exhaust is a little warmer and is melting that rubber hose. Might be time to replace the headers and exhaust. Bike is now more usable and can hit 60 in 3rd

Not bad considering it was my first time, solo, and my bike lift giving up and have to lift the bike by hand...

Still trying to figure out how to remove rear sprocket and replace cush as I can see 3 are holding and 1 is loose.

Sorry, just saw this post. I have received my kit, but haven't installed yet - too busy riding the bike :)

Your engine does look quite different to the 125. well done anyway, got it running!

Your rear sprocket looks different too, on the 125 the sprocket is just held in by a cir-clip - removing that you can remove the sprocket and get to the bushes. I chiselled mine out as the inside bush was completely detached from the rubber.

Update:

Cush have been replaced. 3 dropped out and 1 was just a PITA to remove. 40T rear sprocket installed. Had to removed 2 links from the chain as it was too long. EBC Rear pads installed. Works a little better.

Installed QT throttle. Having issues with the cable length. Seems too short. Did not install the rubber cover pieces it pulled the cable even more. All working properly at the moment but seems there is a bit of lag on te throttle now. Might cut some of that hardline ups thing.

Installed bar end mirrors. It came with a rubber insert with a nut. Doesn't seem to fit properly. Is there a trick to installing this? Might go get some bar end weights with a proper metal insert to use with the mirrors...

Only awaiting a clutch lever base (without the mirror bung) and that shod be it.

I only have left to do with current parts at hand:

Rebuild fork.
Install indicator set.
Install clutch and front brakes w/ braided line and EBC pads.

The rear set and clutch, I still have not found a fix for. Still digging for info as the 125 and 50 have different clutches...

Very impressive to see so much work done to a 50, will be watching this as it progresses. Because all the parts are so light it is not hard at all to strip the bike for powdercoat.

rode the 125 to truro and back on sunday from reynella. small problem with a loose wire to coil but fixed at nuriutpa, sat on 100 to 110 kmh . return trip 230 km . I had my pipe bent by local car exhaust place as when I bought bike it was early days and was not sure how good the bike was going to be. muffler was clamped on to pipe and was just a universal baffled megaphone i had rusting away in my junk pile. i am so glad i saved it and did not throw it out .

Hey guys,

I'm almost done tinkering with it. Need a header built for exhaust and should do for now.. I'm getting bit of backfire from the engine when downshifting due to the exhaust. Still have not found a solution for the clutch (and rear set).

My plan is get everything done and in place first( whatever replacements etc) before cleaning up the frame(cutting unnecessary bits) before powder coating so i've put that off for now.

Having issues with the remote reservoir. Won't bleed properly and I've been at it for the whole day... :-\

Hi, Backfire is usually caused by leak in exhaust system. Check to make sure it's not blowing anywhere.

Hi Tad,

Pretty sure there is a leak. Where the old rubber hose used to tap into the header. ;D Just need to get a header and exhaust done ASAP.

Chris

OK. Updates. Received my muffler so just waiting on some free time to drop the bike off at Redline to get a new header made.

Got new tyres. Metzelers ME22 purchased and installed at GC Motorcycles in Prospect. Happy with the tires and customer service was great. The not so great was the installation. Man, did they F*cked it up big time.

Out of 2 wheels they installed, they managed to stuff up both.

First the front tires, The guy did not line up the magnetic pick up of my speedo to the magnetic nut so I had no speedo on the way home. Also, the hub was put in not completely straight but had a slight gap on the old speedo side as the rubber wasn't seated right when he bolted it in.

Second and the most frightful of the errors, the rear drum brakes was not set right. The guy done it too tight so there was a bit of drag, stopped and loosened it and was fine. What was not fine was that he set drum brakes where the drum brake support was being pulled real tight(I did not see this when I loosened the drum brakes via the nut attached to the metal line attached to the brake pedal. I got home and was checking what the clunking scraping sound was when I was walking the bike into the garage. The brake drum support was detached! The nut attaching it the the drum brake was nowhere to be found (I can only assume it fell out along the way), the locking clip on the nut was obviously gone and the bolt was sitting in the between the frame and the plastic tire cover. The clunking sound was the drum brake support arm hitting the rim. I think I got lucky that the support arm did not get caught in the spokes or else.....

I don't know what to say about this 'supposed' professionals.

I went back to GC today to pick up my old tires but completely forgot to tell them as I was in a bit of rush.

bummer, that shouldnt have happened if they put the split pins in the bolts to hold the nuts on. sounds like they may have got a young bloke to do it that hasnt done an old drum brake before.

Looking good :)

We went for the ContiGo tyres and they made a huge difference over stock.

Quick question, when you added the 70cc kit, did you get the full kit with replacement carb? If so, did you have to adjust it at all, or did it work out of the box? Also, I don't suppose you took any pictures of where the CDI plugs in?

When I removed my exhaust and blew through it, there really didn't seem to be any real restriction. The garage I used for first set up shoved a big rod up the back of it, so maybe that cleared it?!

Hi Sag,

Yeah. The tyres made a great difference. Tyre Guys said that it would take approx 150 km to run in so haven't tried pushing the corners yet. ;D

I got the full replacement kit as per below that came with everything. They didn't have the CDI with the remote so they sent me one without and included an air filter instead (without letting me know by the way). ::)

https://www.ooracing.com/store/tuning-kit-big-bore-50cc-to-70cc-suitable-for-ace-50cc-bikes.html

The carbs were supposedly pre-jetted so I left them alone. I only messed around with the air/fuel mix screw(the small screw far left of the carb)/the rev screw(the big screw) and throttle cable.

I pretty much just took off the old CDI and replaced with the new one. The extra 2 wires are for the RPM limiter. You plug it together to turn it on and it sets an rpm limit controlled by the brass screw you can see on the CDI body. Doesn't work too well (it wasn't consistent at what rpm it cut off) so I left it unplugged.

The muffler is where the main issue and not he header pipe itself. The header pipe has only minimal crushing on the bends except for where they added that extra pipe tap for the EGR. I've cut that shorter and have temporarily sealed that tap with high-temp plastiweld . There are photos of the baffles in the muffler in this site from the other guys to see. I've also noticed a drop in power and max speed when I sealed that tap rather than using it as a bypass(it was causing backfires). I'm wanting to swap out the muffler so needed to get a new header made up to suit

I'm more than likely to have to tune it all again (including the valve gaps) once everything is set and done(better ignition coil/iridium spark/new exhaust done)

Hope that helps.

Chris

Update:

New header and muffler has been installed. Header starts as 1 inch then 1 inch and a 1/4. Muffler was LOUD so a new baffle was added and is still loud. Sounds a lot larger than a 50cc. Everybody will hear me coming ::)

Carb manifold was modified so it sits center rather than leaning right.

I have some black exhaust wrap to install and that should be it for the exhaust. Maybe some additional matting to tone it down more. I am, however, contemplating swapping my muffler with a matt black one...

I have purchased some new electric cables and shrink wraps for battery relocation to be done when the new battery arrives.

Hi Xris, Ace is looking good. Looking at your photo I see that you have the same muffler as me. I found that mine was far to load even stuffed with wadding so I made a baffle for it.
If it's of any use to you I put a thread on here you might want to have a look at for moving the battery and there is some pictures of the baffle I fitted. Threads are; "RE-LOCATING BATTERY" and "The SkyTeam 'Ace' Resource" page 93
Cheers, Tad.

Hi Tad,

Thanks for the compliment :). I have dug up those pages and some others and it will certainly be helpful especially those relating to the battery relocation. Thanks!

We have already put an additional baffle where the header pipe clamps onto the exhaust(seems you did it this way as well). I'm thinking further additional matting will be the only other solution. As the muffler has minimal matting on the original baffles, maybe that will have an additional impact to tone down the sound.

Do you happen to have a video of your exhaust?
