Advice on engine removal

Hi All, we have some old dudes here called Royals in the UK. 99% of the time they piss me off but every now and then one of the old duffers has a birthday or something and we get a day off...RESULT.

Which means extra time working on the bike! So over this long weekend I'm hoping to get the engine out of my DOHC. Any advice or tips etc? I've gotten her pretty much stripped down to the engine and frame now but it looks like a big 'ol lump so I think it's going to be a two man job? Do i need a lift or and specific tools? I've never removed an engine before so am a tad nervous about the whole situation.

I take it first things first is to remove the oil, then slowly loosen all the bolts holding it in the frame...then what? wrestle that sucker out!? is it best to take the head off first? Do it bit by bit as it were.

Thanks
Al

If you're completely breaking the bike down, what many people do is lay the frame over on its side with the engine in, remove the mounting bolts (make sure you remove any nuts that would be on the 'down' side first) and then pull the frame off the engine.

Those lumps are massive and heavy and not easy to pull out. At least a 2 person job, but you can do the laying it over thing on your own.

Installation is the reverse, but being more careful to protect your finishes etc. if you're painting the frame and what-not.

Brake the bike down to just the frame and engine - it would be the last thing to come off.

100% what Tim said ! Also look and see if the bottom right hand side of the frame bolts on as some do and makes it alot easier to pull it . I took the valve cover off to make it a lil easier on mine and tape a clean rag over it to keep junk out ! If you have a old office chair take the back off and you can rest the motor on it to help keep your back from hurting . Then you can wheel it around where you want it just dont leave it on the chair or it could fall off . Good luck !

Agree with Tim. Easiest way. I also drain the oil from the engine first so it doesn't come out of unexpected places when laying on its side.
