Affordable Ontario Insurance on a less than stellar record

Dr.Chris

Kelevra chillin' in the sidecar of my 73 CB350G
I'd like to find affordable bike insurance in Ontario. My particulars are:

- I am a 39 year old male. turning 40 in August.
- I have been licensed since 1985 on cars and 1994 on bikes.
- I have been continuously insured on cars for 22 years, but I've not been insured on bikes since 1995.
- I unfortunately have one ticket (disobey a sign) on my drivers record.
- There is possibly a second ticket, for disobey lane light, on the record too but it's technically under appeal so should not be listed as a conviction. If it is I can
get it removed at least temporarily.
- There is a $5000 claim from 2003 when I was hit by another driver, writing off the Pontiac Firefly Convertible I was driving. The other driver was charged
and found to be 100% at fault.
- I took the motorcycle riders course at Humber College in Etobicoke but that was way back in 1994.
- The bike in question is a 1973 Honda CB350G K5, that I paid $1000 for.

Given my less than steller current status I'm not anxious to send my current insurance company or agent digging, nor do I want my prospective bike provider to go letting them know if they found anything juicy while poking around. I'm on my way to get a abstract on myself from the MTO but I'm wondering if anyone has any advice, or at a minimum knows a good bike insurance company so I can start making some calls.

Thanks,
Christopher

For old bikes, one of the more popular insurance brokers is JR Duffy and the underwriter is Jevco.

For no-coverage liability only, for a smaller bike you should be paying less than $500. I pay $625 for my 1975 BMW R75/6 750 and have 3 minor tickets in play. That 3rd ticket cost me an extra $75 on the premium for this year.

I think any insurance company will do a basic search on your record.

It's funny... I just called them on my CB360... and was told $740 a year... might try a different broker, cause that was retarded... plus when I asked about prices compared to my previous insurance with Jevco (which was <$600 with a 500 Magna)... here was my response:

"The quote I provided you was through Jevco Insurance. They have the best rate that I have. Rates were lower four years ago & so was gas and a lot of other things."

As far as I go, I'm not gonna talk to them again...

So if you're not using Jevco who are you with?

Doesn't matter which broker you use, you'll get the same quote. I called Duffy and Baird MacGregor, both gave me identical quotes with the same info. I went with Baird since they're close to downtown and I've had a policy with them before. Jevco really is the only insurer when it comes to vintage bikes.

Ditto on that.

My broker insured me with another company who dropped me immediately when they found out my bike was over 20 years old. I'm with Jevco now. They nail you really hard the first year. I paid $883 last year, but it's gone down to $573 now. The reason I was given was, a lot of people get bikes, keep them one season and don't ride again for years. The size of the bike is not really that important. The liability on my bike is only around $250 the rest is all accident benefits. I almost had a fit when I found out how much insurance costs now since the last bike I had a number of years ago only cost around $230 a year, but the accident benefit thing is now required by law, and tend to be rather large payouts on bike accidents.

It really pissed me off that the quotes for my old bike were more than I would have had to pay for a much newer one!! The broker who explained this stuff to me is a long time bike rider and he wasn't too pleased about it either. He said these decisions are made in a boardroom somewhere by people who know nothing about bikes, and while it makes no sense whatsoever we just have to eat it and smile.

I've been licenced since 1978 on bikes, but if you don't keep it up they look at you as a brand new rider for the first year. I have a '74 Honda CB750 and live in Kitchener.

$1,000,000 liability through Jevco was $672 per year on my CB350, She asked me six times if it was a sport bike because the rate would have been triple.

Chris - what did they identify as the cause for what I think is a high rate? That's more than I'm paying for my BMW 750.

Se didn't say, but I'm sure it is the fact that I'm basically considered a new rider. I have not been insured, or even ON a bike since 1995. The $1,000,000 liability may have bumped it up a bit and there is a $49.00 option for "Family Protection" that tops up liability if I'm hit by someone who is not insured or not insured well.

Ahhhh... ask them what the insurance will be in coming years. My friend got the 'new rider' premium on his BMW R90/6. Costing him about $300 extra for the first year.

Primmum is a good bet for cheaper insurance. They have my 1979 KZ650. PL & PD costs under 500$/yr. They are a little touchy about older bikes - I was told nothing over 30 years but a buddy has his '75 750 with them (insured it last year when it would have been 30+)

(45yr old male - riding bikes almost 30years, the odd ticket OF COURSE)

2 speeding tickets, Well under $300.00

Dominon of Canada.

Bike Licence for 3 years.

Yeah I'm sure it's my newness that's bumping the price up.

True... My first year it was almost $400, second year it was roughly $300, now it's about $200... BUT I also added my truck to the policy this year, so that might have helped. With Dominion of canada... ask your broker, they might be able to check em out specifically.

My cheapest quote so far is $2900 per year for a 75 CB550F. First Bike, M2 license, clean record w/ a motorcycle course. I may have to sell my bike instead. :'(

WHAT??!??!!?!

Who with? Call J.R. Duffy Insurance - (905) 479-2013 - you want liability-only insurance. Should run about $700 first year (my guess) and then come down in year 2 to $500 or so. Jevco is the underwriter.

tried them, jevco won't insure me becuase i have no previous insurance history on a motorcycle. And that quote was for only liability nothing else, tried a few other companies as well, I was either too young or the bike was too old. If you know of any other companies let me know. i tried State Farm, Primmum, JR Duffy, Dominion Of Canada, Jevco, JD Smith, Kingsway and Pioneer. The cheapest i have gotten so far was $2849 through JR duffy.

Really? Must be some new rule. Not sure what to suggest unfortunately.

Im glad I live in iowa, being insured on a bike is going to save me about 50 bucks a month, 240$ off of the 690$ im playing for my land rover to be insured.
