After More than 30 Years...This Happened!!

I put the carbs back on the CB450 the other day and made a gas tank out of a 20oz water bottle and fuel line and I couldn't get it to run except for about 3 or 4 seconds with a shot of starter fluid. So, I had air and spark but obviously no fuel... I took the carbs back apart and and found that one of the previous owners had no idea how to set the fuel float level. After a quick adjustment and re assembly I put them back on the bike. Now I'm sure that the motor has been cranked and started since the last time this bike was inspected/registered but it had not been inspected/registered since 1978!! After I put the carbs back on it took about two turns of the engine and this happened!!!

1970 CB450 Start

WOOHOO!!!
I love when stuff goes right and works like it should! I still have other adjustments to make i.e. check timing points and fine tune idle screw and throttle cable but so far its off to a great start!

Good work, I love the sound of the 450s. What are your plans with the bike?

I just started a build thread today even though I've already gotten several things done. It won't be a strict cafe' i.e. no rearsets or clubmans but I'm going to try to mix a few new details in with a lot of original parts. I cut the fenders down but I'm going to use the stock tail light (moved of course) It'll also get a rad new color paint!!
Check it out!!

sweeeeeeet!

I think the last registration on my bike was 1980. I was so giddy when I first heard combustion, I literally ran in the house and posted in my build thread, then ran back outside and managed to actually get it to idle for a bit.

how did you make that fuel tank you were talking about? That would come in handy when adjusting carbs...

You can buy 'I.V. bottle' fuel supplies from Motion Pro etc. made specifically for this purpose.

I know the tool you're talking about, but I'd rather not spend the money. I've seen homemade auxiliary tanks that work just as well but cost cents to make. I was wondering how he fitted the fuel hose to the bottle. Otherwise I could hook up a tiny lawnmower gas tank, but that would be more of a hassle than a small bottle :p

I measured the tee with a pair of calipers the used a drill bit that was about .010" smaller so that it would have a tight fit. It doesn't leak but if I con't to use it I'll probably get a two part epoxy to put around it just to make sure it doesn't. I made the fuel lines long enough so that when I filled the bottle with fuel I could turn the car right side up and screw the bottle into the cap. The only other thing I would do different is put a length of hose out the bottom of the bottle so you could hold it up high enough not to pour out while filling then it would act as a vent when it's upside down.

Yeah or a high school science project! If you end up do this at some point and are going to run the bike for more than say 30 sec or so you might want to look into putting that vent I mentioned. I was running it and looked back at it and it was collapsing on itself.
