after you polish aluminum what keeps it from dulling?

I see all of these people polishing up their alum parts and it DOES look sweet but I was thinking, don't most of the parts come with protective clearcoat from the factory? If you polish it up what protects the aluminium from corroding and looking like crap?

After polishing with Mothers, I give it a coat of Carnuba car wax, the old fashioned hard stuff, not the new fangled liquids.
