im trying to find a smaller pointless regulator to fit under my seat on a 69 cl 350. the stock one is about 1/4 to tall.

can i use any regulator just as long as its a 12v max?????

If you don't go with the combo unit, definitely change out your rectifier too. It's about $4 from radio shack and is a much smaller, solid state one. Takes about 3 minutes to swap out. All you do is take the female plastic plug housing thats on the current wiring harness off and use the blade type connections that are inside. They hook right up.

Check out this link for the how-to:

Here is the product:

I think there is a regulator in the $50 mod thread too.

That regulator is only good for 1.5 amps max.
Better option is to replace both rectifier and regulator with a modern combined unit.
Harleys use similar design stator to the early Honda twins, so this will work well and is priced right:

That is a great price. $37 bucks. I've been looking for a reg/rec this week. Any tips on the wiring? It's hard to see what to expect from the photo.

How to wire in a Harley Regulator/Rectifier in place of the stock Honda Rectifier and regulator.
Using a Harley Big Twin regulator 1981-88, cost about $50 or so. Many other Harley units are similar.

This Harley regulator/rectifier has 3 wires coming out of it.
There's a plug at the end of 2 of the wires on the regulator/rectifier that can be cut off and those 2 wires connected to the old Honda rectifier wires as follows (CB360 color codes):
- One plug wire (either one, it doesn't matter which) connects to the old rectifier pink wire.
- The other plug wire connects to the old rectifier yellow wire.
The 3rd regulator/rectifier wire should be connected to the old rectifier red/white wire.
Lastly, the regulator/rectifier case should be connected to the old rectifier green wire using one of the bolts being used to mount the case to the bike.
Of course, remove the old rectifier and the old regulator, they are both being replaced by the new regulator/rectifier.
That's about it!
