Anyone know what size mm carb a 1980 CM400 has, I have looked everywhere and come up with a few sizes but no real answer. Maybe 54mm but not sure. If anyone knows what size the carb is I would greatly appreciate it. I want to put filter pods on it and need to know what size so I can buy them.
maybe he doesn't have calipers. or maybe he doesn't know if air filters list internal or external diameters. or maybe removing his current air filters is a pain and he can't measure the carbs with them on there.
At the risk of being called a jerk (like I care )
if something as simple as measuring a carb is too difficult, how the hell are you going to re-jet the most difficult carb there is?
Put stock airbox back on so the damn thing is ridable
Just registered for an account so I could comment on this!
I have a 1979 CB400TII and it's being a bugger. It's boggy in the mid range and poppy / sneezy a lot but smooths out with the choke on. I put CM400 carbs on it because the ones on it to begin with had a broken emulsion tube in one. Also, my stock air-box is gone.
If you had a lot of carburetor experience it is possible to make them work.
There is no easy fix, just changing main jet will make it worse somewhere else in rev range
It has primary and secondary main jets, can't remember if it has adjustable needles? (some do, most don't)
Shimming needles makes mid range worse if secondary main is correct for 'full throttle'/high rpm
It also has air cut valves and some have accelerator pumps.
The 3~6 pilot bleeds transition at different air speeds/engine rpm/slide opening positions (NOT throttle opening)
You would be better off looking for a used airbox.
