All Bare Aluminum tank.. Rust?

Hey qq.. if i were to polish the tank.. bare metal.. what do people do to protect it against rust etc? clear UV coat or something?

hmm. ok i will have to confirm what this tank is. i dont think its alum. got it mixed up when writing the post. thanks!

Chances are it's steel - most people clear coat them, but if it were me I'd just carry some sandpaper around :)

got recommended this product from a local dtt member. never tired but his bike is all bare metal and he said it hasent rusted yet. i contacted the company and asked them this question. i told them i wanted to try a project on metal where i wanted to let it rust ( on my gas tank) and then asked them if the (permalec, the product i was recommended) would seal the metal and stop the rust from forming any more and then said it would. i wanted to do like a rusty tank type paint job. so just thought id throw that out there for everyone.

It's probably steel. If you go with a brushed look keep it that way with 4 ought (0000) steel wool and ATF rub downs on a regular basis, then wipe with a dry towel.

It oxidizes
And it starts as soon as it is exposed to the atmosphere.
It oxidizes and forms a layer of corundum, which prevents it from further oxidizing. If he polishes and keeps it clean, then it should be fine unless he likes pouring mercury all over his tank.

If the tank really is aluminum, any paint/powder/etc. coating applied will take away the natural luster of the metal. Aluminum does not rust, and with a polish, good wax, and a cleaning every so often it wont oxidize either. Suprisingly enough the Turtle Wax "Ice" liquid polish/wax is tremendous. Ive used it on polished metals and chrome and have always been quite happy with the results.
