OK, intro thread...
I got this '82 cb450sc in a trade recently:
I'm in Mississippi, and down here we ride dirtbikes, 3- and 4-wheelers as soon as we're walking, but this is my first proper motorcycle.
The first thing I did was get online and start to track down info on the bike, find out what I need to read to start my life as a motorcyclist out right, etc. Google points me to a thread on some forum called "Dot Heton" (or something), and I click it. "Wow... That's beautiful! Ok, so THAT'S what a cafe racer is..." I'd heard about them from good friends who ride, a couple of guys I know even ride them, but I'd never really paid attention. Well, I'm paying close attention now. Man, I've lost a LOT of sleep in the last month or so, reading the history of the culture, drooling on bikes, etc.
I grew up in skateboarding. From the mid-80s all the way up til, well... til now. I opened a little skateshop back in '96 and ran it til a few years ago ('08) when I sold it to a young dude who practically grew up under my feet in the shop. Over the course of those years I opened a private skatepark, booked punkrock/hardcore shows there, organized contests, helped get kids sponsored, took kids on road trips to parks and contests all over the southeast and beyond, worked with the city to build a free public skatepark, and did everything in my power to help grow a positive skate scene in my town. I mention all that for only one reason: I know what it is to be a part of a culture that you love, (a subculture, even), I know what it is to come up in that culture, to learn from the guys that were riding when I was a just a grom, to respect the past and be stoked on the future. I can tell that this aint gonna be my last bike, (I'm already scanning craigslist like a hungry buzzard looking for a dead early 70's Honda to learn to build on), and I'm planning on hanging around here as much as I can. I just wanted to drop in here first and say that I don't know much, and I know that I dont know much. I'm stoked to be here, and I'm already way indebted to DTT.
Thanks, yall. Look forward to hearing from some of you.
