all depends what you feel comfortable on man... how much you want to spend? that is the main thing... 99% of time when people ask me what bike to get as their first bike i sugest the Honda spirit 750... fantastic bike, small enough to be cool when you start and big enough to hold on to while you are comfortable... plus you can do limitless stuff to them, and easily carry a passanger... i have many frineds that ride and love them off my recomendations as a first bike... but they run 3200 - 5g for the newer style... if you are only looking at spending a few hundo your looking at a wrencher that i think people will tell you will end up costing around 1500 - 2g after you wrench on it to get it back into riding shape... what is your budget what are you looking for? oooh ya i always sugest you take the course 1st! i have people that i know that always wanted bikes and then took the class and found out riding was jsut not for them... or they loved it but what they wanted as a bike was completely different than what they thought they wanted... take the course first, state class is only 20 bucks and they provide the bike... and you get a fancy T shirt

Actually Joe I took the state course last summer. It is essentially free now. You pay the 20 or 25 bucks up front to reserve; and they refund it to you when the class is over. (regardless of whether you pass or fail) You have to pay for the shirt if you want one...LOL

Joe -

I have a couple grand to play with. I'd like to get more of a standard bike, not a cruiser, if I can find one. I don't mind having to fix a few things although my wrenching skills and tools are limited. A 30/40 year old standard with some simple mechanical and minor cosmetic issues would be perfect!

I looked at the MSF class at NIU. I don't know if I want to make the drive - I live in St. Charles. Some Harley friends of mine were trying to talk me into taking the Rider's Edge course which is a lot more expensive. Is there any difference between the two classes?

Any tips on where to start looking for a bike? I'm wary of eBay/Craigslist because I don't know what to look for. Are there any places around that specialize in vintage bikes?

ihave a TX500 cafe that i am going to sell in the spring. a CB500 as well that i belive a guy on here is going to buy, plus i have a bandit 600 completely custom, and a cb350 bobber that i am building now

i would imagine somewhere around 2300... i am still nto sure... was offered 3500 at a show last year i should have jumped on it! but i was so pumped to ahve it on the road again... i am not sure i will prob sell that one at a bike show to get top $ out of it... it is on the lift right now for some perfomace upgrades and some more powder work

Hey guys, I'm Todd. I actually live up in Kenosha, WI but it's close enough that I spend more time in IL than WI. Work in North Chicago.

Picked up my first bike, 71 cb350 this weekend downtown by Humboldt Park. Looking for a right side carb with a choke plate, mine's missing :) Here she is, in her $500 glory!

1. Greg but prefer my user name.
2. Sadorus IL. Just outside Champaign-Urbana
3. Current ride is a GS1100GL. Got to finish up some work on it before warm weather gets here though. Also have 2 '83 Honda V45's that are gonna get bobbed/chopped, and will be picking up a '72 Kawasaki H1 here shortly. Going cafe with it. That's why I'm here.

In my spare time I enjoy airbrushing and custom painting, which I used to do fulltime. These days I just manage a fleet body shop for my 9-5.

Dragon, how the hell did you get a titled bike for $500 here in the city? I just picked up a 71 cl350 and could find NOTHING for that cheap except parts bikes. I don't want to talk about what I paid now.... lol.

Anyways, I'm Rob and I live on the north side of the city.

I'm looking for someone to weld a couple of parts as well. My round off bar should be delivered soon and I want to well up the original riser mounts on my top tree along with a few smaller things. I really don't want to dish out crazy money, since as you guys know parts add up fast! Anyone around able to weld?

Do you do small powder jobs? my dad has some brackets for his trailer that need to be powdercoated just so they don't rust... color/finish doesn't matter.

oh! just saw your site.... Woodstock on 47 eh? What hours are you guys usually around? I'll swing by on the bike sometime...

heh, bet it looks great! I can't wait to start on the Vulcan... too much chrome. Needs more powdercoat. Doing the washer sounds like a great finishing touch.
