An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - I am ALIVE - New pics

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Gas tank is finished priming - picture

Good man smart man. I hate seeing these newb running around buying bike that are too big, powerful and fast for them to learn on. It will come in time.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Gas tank is finished priming - picture

Yeah...I don't want to learn on something that puts out 200 horsepower with the Nos, and weighs less than 400 pounds. I would probably learn to stop quickly though...Into the nearest wall.

That being said, I have reason to believe that this bike will give older ninjas and 600s a run for their money. In town, anyways.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Gas tank is finished priming - picture

I got it all wet sanded (took forever, but got it pretty nice). Now I am about to do a topcoat of flat black. I am wondering if I can use a misting coat of primer on top of the top coat as a guide coat? Or is that a bad idea?

Matt

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Gas tank is finished priming - picture

take a few minutes and read Twisted wheelz thread "Rattle can Bling" he goes in to great detail on how to get good results from the spray can.

My .02 on where you are is once you have wet sanded the primer be sure to clean it (duh ::)) then go ahead and apply your top coats I usually do a couple light coats letting them flash for 10-15 minutes then a good medium wet coat.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Gas tank is finished priming - picture

I read that thread, I just had trouble understanding it completely. How long does one normally wait to wet sand paint? The stuff I have dries to the touch in 40 minutes, but takes 36 hours to cure. Can I wet sand before it is fully cured?

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Gas tank is finished priming - picture

Okay, today I got some important stuff done, but nothing to exciting. Mainly, I got my title squared away, and it will be coming in the mail. I also got the gas cap sandblasted and cleaned up...Need to bondo it and sand it, then it will be ready to prime and paint glossy white.

What DID happen today that was exciting though, is my brakes came in!
DSCN0333.jpg

I am also found some quick realese pins in my dads 'junk' dresser of misc bike parts, that match the calipers perfectly...And seem to fit.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

cool those will look good. Will they fit those forks you have without any modification.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

I need to make a braket to adapt the 65mm calipers to the 85mm fork mounts, but other than that, they should be fine. My dad said he would help me...He has made them before. I will probably just draw it up in solidworks, and then use the little CNC machine at his work after hours.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

Good start. Man post some pictures of your dads bike!

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

Here are some pictures and a semi-current list of mods on it...The ecu is has since been blown, is is in the process of being replaced with a megasquirt 2 system.

Heres the list of modifications and specs...some of it is out of date, but it is fairly accurate.

Here is the bike...fairings are partially removed since we are starting some work on it:
DSCN0320.jpg

This is a closeup of the engine and dry clutch - note the throttle bodies that he built himself. They will probably be replaced with new gsxr1000 throttle bodies. The engine is a hybrid of several different years and models of gsxrs, it has a displacement of almost 850 ccs and produces somewhere around 130-140 horsepower, before the nitrous.
DSCN0319.jpg

This is the custom two-part oil cooler, one half of it cools the bottom end of the engine, the other half is dedicated to cooling the head and cylinder, each is a seperate system with different oil pumps. The headers he also built by hand, custom to fit around the deep sump oil pan he put on the bike, the bike holds about 7 quarts of oil to keep it cool.
DSCN0318.jpg

This is with the tail-section removed to show a 2 pound bottle of nitrous hidden under there, along with a bottle warmer. It's a single stage wet system giving 70hp. Also note the yoshimura exhaust, has replaced the supertrapp exhaust that is listed in the modifications list.
DSCN0317.jpg

This is another closeup of the nitrous
DSCN0316.jpg

Other things I don't have pictures of, are the front and back ohlins shocks, the custom built adjuster on the handlebar that allows him to adjust the ride height of the swing arm on the fly, and the uprated front and rear brakes. All of the work was completed about 10-15 years ago. some of it earlier. It had above and beyond the best available of it's day.

Along with those shown there are numerous other mods and customizations that he has done to it, there literally is nothing on the bike that hasn't been changed. Besides the decals and fairings (though the chin fairing was cut to accept the larger bore exhaust and custom headers.

As I said earlier, people to this day ask me about his bike when they see or hear my last name.

I really doubt I will be able to hold a candle to the amount of work and craftsmanship that he has put into his bike with my bike. Lol

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

That list just went on and on! What an incredible machine. Awesome.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

that is one hell of a list of mods!

id love to see that whip a newer gsxr into shape on the street ;D ;D

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

Your dad's bike is pretty cool, but to be honest, I think you can one-up him. The bike you bought is seemingly unconventional, but I think it is a perfect starting spot. At your age, I recommend a 2 person seat because the ladies will want to ride the bike, and only good things will come from that.

The weekend is here; get back to work on her.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

I don't think so; you must remember he did all this years ago...There are mods on that bike that I see finally coming into use on new bikes today. He did the EFI system on it well before any bikes where being produced with it. He fixed problems and inproved things years before the aftermarket ever caught up with it. If he had started selling some of the things he did, he would be rich. Never bothered though. All the parts under the special parts of that spec sheet he built by himself while still in his twenties.

I remember the other day I was watching a video of a engineer talking about the Ducati Desmosedici RR and how one of the main features was and adjustable suspension without taking your hand off of the throttle...I showed the video to my dad, and he walked over and pointed to the exact thing on his bike...from 1986.

So, I would have trouble doing stuff to that caliber, since now the new innovations are in highly sophisticated electronics, not innovative mechanical device.

That being said, he said I could have it. I don't know for sure if I want it though...I don't feel comfortable learning on a bike that has 20 or 30 thousand into it, and countless man hours of labor.

Also...I do intend to try...Just not with this bike. I just want to make this into a cool daily-driver-head-turner. When I get some real money, I want to play with a Ducati Superbike. The older 851s are gorgeous....As is every other machine they produce.

Sadly, I already bought a single seat. Hehe. Though, I am looking for a cheap starting spot for my girlfriend. I figure if I get her a working bike out of the blue...She'll have to ride it a few times. And it would give me another winter project...Though I do have to get my car done too, if my wallet can ever take that expensive little project down...

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

LOL. You'll learn to step out of that shadow soon enough.

--Chris

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

Possibly.

Anyways, back to the project at hand. Since the frame and parts of the engine are all being baked and cleaned, there isn't much to do besides paint the tank, but I want to find a better spot first, since last time the whole house was filled with paint fumes.

But, I did get a working crankshaft ordered...Sadly I missed the bidding on the one I was watching, and ended up having to pay 50 bucks more. Oh well, my fault for missing it.

The tail section should be here soon as well...I think Christmas is slowing the shipping down.

Hopefully I will get my frame back soon, then I can start the real work of chopping the frame, and cutting/fabing/modifying brackets to suit my needs.

I still need to come up with a way to mount the headlight. I am not sure of the easiest way to do it...The bike originally had this ugly as sin setup where pieces of sheet metal wrapped around the fork tubes...But...Ick. Maybe I could come off of the gauge rack?

I also need to find some decent rear shocks to replace the rather worn out ones that are on the bike. Anyone have any good sources for shocks...Every so often I find a gorgeous set of vintage ohlins dual shocks. But those are few and far between, and usually pretty worn. I really want to find a set with a remote reservoir coming off the shock, since I think those look great, and match the rest of the bike, in the sense of a 'new/old' mash up.

I really need to find any good source of older bike parts...I am going to need a new gasket set for the engine for sure, probably miscellaneous bearings and whatnot as well.

-Matt

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

How long a shock do you need? ZRX's have piggy back kayaba's. Might be too long though. I like your dads bike but not my style. You can build a cooler bike. The headlight situation You could do a mount off the triple clamp sporty style or from the bottom. I have also seen some nice aluminum clamps that mount to the fork tubes like the ones you have but nicer. I'm probably gonna do some sort of triple mount or make my own fork mounts.

Re: An Introduction, and a Motorcycle - Brembos came in - New pictures

13-14 inch shocks are what where on it (uncompressed) but that may or may not change, depending on what final ride height I want on the bike.

Yeah, I am been looking on several different styles...But I think I will have to wait until the bike is closer to see what is right for it.

I am spraying the topcoat of Satin Black paint on the tank now...Only a few more coats and it's done until wetsanding.

I put three coats down, then let dry one hour then used scotch bright to brush out any little bits of hair that found it's way into the fist layers of paint...Now I am throwing down another 4-5 medium to light coats and calling it good.

Pictures up when it gets done.
