an update on my old scoot

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

Finished making the 4-1. My goal was to keep the open look of the mockup I did when I first painted the tank 'cause once I put the pipes on the side it kinda ruined the open flow.. anyways whadya think?

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

The baffles on the end are just attempts of minimal silencing. I may go through and add some internal baffles to the collector and avoid the silencer can. Alternately a short 3 inch dia. section may come up a little bit to the side. The details of the header are equal length primaries merged into the collector. I still need to heat wrap and paint later on. No leaks though.

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

it seems like you didn't finish- the collector looks crooked, and what did you do to the open ends?

sorry to criticize heavily but I don't know what the meaning of this is, you'll lose performance and make a lot of unwanted noise.

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

When I started cutting and chopping, My goal was to keep the clean look of the reassembly pics and not have any exhaust bits up around the side of the swingarm. I really dug that open look. The exhaust is somewhat of a work in progress. It Is not soooo loud that it is obnoxious, my jetting has not changed. I can appreciate what you are getting at by the design but for the mean-while I am just leavin it while I shotgun blast work on the other parts that I still need tending too.

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

I did finally get a seat made that I am happy with. I learned alot in the process so thats what counts right?

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

Also I think I am getting better with pinstriping. I added this to the cowl because one of the goals I had when I made it was to maintain the bare, polished aluminum look. However, it seemes a bit plain to me so I added some pinstriping in the same scallop pattern for visual flow. I still owe some striping to the tank edges, probably in black.

I am starting to feel that I am half-assing some of the steps on building this bike up. Examples are the seat stitching isn't perfect, the cowl is a tad bumpy in spots, I am undecided on the exhaust, I appreciate midnight's comment about the collector and many of you have built more, prettier bikes than I . So if you think I am heading down the wrong path somewhere gimme a kick in the junk so I don't miss it and lazy past it.

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

Quite like the pipes, look a lot like a Yoshi race system ;D

There are a couple of things you do need though, main one being a fork brace of some type (it will handle like a 3 legged camel as you have it now)
CB360 is about 200lbs lighter and it has problems without brace

Need to cut collector back off and put it at better angle then redesign outlets (maybe just heat it up and bend a bit?)

I would shorten the outlets and weld washers with small hole in.
Drill some holes through from sides, split a piece of exhaust pipe about 5"~7" long and weld half sections to sides, covering holes.
Leave front and back open
Makes it slightly wider but with multiple outlets

I really like the pinstriping, brings out the hand-rolled look of your seat cowl. It reminds me of the vintage bike scene in Japan (shinya kimura, hwzn bros) where age and rust are respected over shiny show bikes. To me, that is a motorcycle scene I want- NEED to experience. Here's some photos from their blog:

Leave parts unfinished and have them attain an attractive patina. These guys won't do bodywork, they'll just either leave the bondo exposed or pinstripe over the dent (fuck yes!). You're probably not going in this direction for your build, but maybe you should- forget worrying about making it look nice if you can't afford the time or money to get there. Look for inspiration at this site: http://bubblevisor.blogspot.com/ it cites a load of websites all about motorcycle design, might make you rethink about what you want your motorcycle to be.

Re: CB750 cafe project FTW new pics

No real progress, just been riding and sorting out things. I have one problem that I need help sorting, as follows.

The bike has something like 23K on the clock. It gets a bit hot in town I fear as there is some smoke I guess coming off the engine, maybe we can call it steam. There is also some oil usage that requires a half quart every two weeks or so of commuting 20 miles per day.

So that's it, should I worry?

Re: CB750 oil system, smoking engine help plz

Re: the oil system still, the head breather pipe connects to where? Also the top small fitting on the reverse side of the oil tank should connect to what also. It seems as though that the vapor coming from that pipe was my supposed smoking problem. I would want to connect this pipe to said fitting but I don't think that a vapor pressurized system is ideal.
Can some others show me what they have done?
