Anachronism: the heap formerly known as Bitch!!

Thanks guys I rather like'm my own self! Couldn't have afforded them if I wanted though....
luckily I made some fixtures for them a year or so ago so I got a deal. They still cost more than the entire bike....but why waste time on good sense? It'd get in the way of all the fun.....

I kinda feel bad leaning them on the crusty old frame.......

Like a mink coat on a $2 ho, but you're gonna church her up. Think of the shot like a visual promise. I'd frame it myself.

HAHAHAHA...from Bitch to Anachronism to Ho.......I think I'll stick with it for now.

On a more somber note: Who the hell spot welds a friggin' bearing cup to a frame? I'm ready to send the frame out for media blasting, all I need to do is tap out the haggard old steering bearing cups. But the fookin' things won't budge! Scrub really well and sure enough.....two little welds on each. Almost look factory but that doesn't make any sense at all....weird.
Oh well, some cursing, some grinding, more cursing and a smashed thumb and both are out. The steering tube is fine but what a pain. Mr.Stupidass hobby welder....please go jump off an overpass. Pretty please?

So, currently the crusty old frame is headed off for a quick pass thru a blast cabinet...sucks...I gotta pay for it. My homebrew cabinet has issues and will likely be a large squirrel feeder before I blast anything clean in it. Oh well....

In the mean time I'm going to turn up some swing arm and fork leg spools for the stands though I'm really interested in a stem stand up front. Just don't want to buy one. I need to get shock mount dovetails welded onto the swing arm....I guess I'd better make'm too.

I've found that the top eyes to those spiffy shocks are the wrong size (by a lot) but it's my fault, I spec'd the wrong bushing. I'm waiting to hear back from Jute on what I can do. He's in Holland so it'll be a bit before he gets back to me on that. No biggie though....

how the hell did i miss this!!!! man hell ya! stoked to see this sucker, let me know if i can help in any way... those shocks give me a chubby!

Thanks Joe, me too. I have to stop myself from just sitting here in the shop fondling them and making baby talk sounds....
I'll be hitting you up for your particular services on the wheels as we talked about earlier this year. I'm pretty psyched!

Thank you sir, though personally I'd hesitate to claim that after seeing everything else going on here.

and thats whats cool man, makes you even cooler in my book, the humble gets praised, and the guys who try to act like they are better than everybody get shut up and shot down.

Hey what tapered steering bearings are you using? I can't find my notes and I have a headache so I'm feelign too lazy to search myself.....
part number by chance?

The previous owner took care of alot of stuff on my bike since he was building it up so I didn't need to replace them, and I don't have my info with me so no part number. Sorry bout that not very helpful.
Maybe a quick google will bring somethin up, a buncha places sell them so something is bound to come up.

Ahh sorry to hear that man, headaches suck,Take some advil always takes care of my headaches but ofcourse I exceed the reccomended dose lol

I have a friend with a BSA Gold star, and he had a lot of trouble keeping the lower bearing ring seated. His head stock housing had worn a little so the ring wasn't a snug fit and would spin around and cause more wear. The fix these days is with something called 'bearing loc', which works much the same as loctite I think? I can imagine that a hillbilly fix would be to tack weld it in as well ::)

You might want to just keep an eye on it when you refit your new set and make sure it's a snug fit.

cheers

Hurley: thanks anyway man. I ate a pile of tylenol so here's hoping....

bikeboy: yeah worth keeping in mine for sure though once I carefully ground away the teeny tine little weld they were still pretty snug. I use blue loctite anyway....

did you sort out the steering bearing deal?

oh i just thought of how cool this bike is going to sound! damn dude its going to be awesome!

Yeah got the old races out after some strategic grinding and a fair amount of swearing.
Herm at DimeCity got me dialed in with new tapers for a price that I can't see anyone beating so life's good!

As to the eventual sound....well I certainly hope it sounds good. With the compression/cams and errr...lack of extensive baffling, it should sound burly. In truth I don't want it to piss people off so I won't let it get too nuts in the loud-pipe department but it won't shyly whisper by either.... hehe

Man Swagger... I am really pumped to see (and hear) the end result here. So much going on with this build that most cats dont even think about. Myself included. Well played sir... Well played.

Thank you sir! It's gonna be a long road methinks....between gettin' by on less $$$ than I'd like, other bikes I gotta get done and that 'thing' I briefly mentioned in the shoutbox the other night...my time and funds are really limited for a while to come.

I've actually considered veering even farther from 'good sense' on this one because it IS going to be long LONG term. I built a very sturdy frame fixture a few years back and used it twice then put it in storage until i need it again. I've been thinking about something kinda spiffy; sort of Seeley Mk.IV inspired with the engine underslung and used and a stressed member. I picked up what I think may be an old Collin Seeley frame a while ago and thought about using it but it's pretty bad off, but did come with a box of bits...brackets and a steering tube....in the bottom is an illegible hand written note signed 'CS'......could it be? Who knows but I've loved the Seeley machines, especially the later underslung bikes like his short-lived and fucking amazing G50 Condor:

Building something with a format similar to this would allow a lot of freedom to move things around. I'd really like to see the swing arm pivot raised about an inch and a half and moved forward as much as possible and that's obviously not gonna happen with the stock frame. However, rotate the engine a few degrees to the fore and suddenly the options open wide! I have a fairly regular group of Dayton 675 and 955 guys coming by the shop and I'd bet I could get a frame from the local shop to steal the actual geometry from.....both of those bikes are brilliant handlers. The 955 that lived with me was so nice. Planted, trackable and still comfy. The 675 is obviously a thinly veiled track weapon for those of slighter build....but just the same, a great point to start and I have access to either if I ask nice.

Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of man...........

Build your own frame!! I am nearing the home stretch on mine and I think it will be worth the effort. It can be a bit daunting figuring out the geometry, but it also is very nice to be able to put things where you like. Whether it sticks like glue or handles like shit is completely in your hands..lol.

I'm thinking of doing that on my next bike, where do you start, some guy told me to just draw the shapes on the floor with chalk, and then bent to fit, weld it all together and call it good. I'm not sure about that tho.
