And just to kick a dead horse ...

It's fine by me if it is truly good work being done. Where the parts actually fits together and there is a "red line" througout the bike. Most don't.

I thought I had had enough of listening to dudes discuss "what is punk" in all my time behind a bar until I heard all this......

The last thing i want is for some one to get hurt on a bike becouse of something they changed but i will not lose any sleep if a cl350 and a xs650 get sawed in half and welded together to make a cxls1000 in a town ive never heard of by some one ill never meet on second thought put me down fir one on the cxls1000 ill give ya 20 grand but it needs to come from some racie custom shop that no ones heard of with a name like pinwheel cycles home of the cxls1000 as seen on bla bla HD oyea you will also need some rocker with neck tats telling a business model to a brit with a camcorder for your sales ad use a caps also CXLS1000 PINWHEEL CYCLES new litter bike

reading that ebay listing and i see...
Twinline Motorcycles will be building a motorcycle using a classic Honda frame, with a modern 600cc parallel twin engine from an ex500 kawasaki.
 could someone explain how that's gonna happen.

I agree 100% with Kop that old bikes, like oil and clean water are not a limitless resource. The current Dace Bike trend has spawned a whole new generation of people who in general know little about bikes but want to look cool and they have been led to believe that grinding bits off old bikes is the way to go. The fact that the chopping often leaves the bikes barely functional and not even legal is some states doesn't seem to be an issue.

Of course we want people to share our excitement and love of bikes, but I hate to see so many bikes turning into scrap metal so fast. many of the projects will never be built or if they do will not run well and eventually will be abandoned and that's a shame.

I guess that our role is to be role models and to encourage new riders to think before they chop and to learn to ride before they turn a bike into a pile of scrap.

I agree with most everything here. As far as the way a bike "looks" when done, if they arent building it for you, piss off. A guy/gal can throw a Harley tank on a cb350 with a cafe seat thats 6" too long and rattle can the whole fucking bike puke green w/ pink flames. As long as the bike is SAFE than more power too them. I have gotten a lot of flak from members (who usualy find somewhere else to hang out) here who were in the process of building rolling death traps. They just couldnt be told that their "brilliant" ideas were going to end up with them in a wheelchair by myself or the other members who were just looking out for there safety. That said, Teazer is right. Its our job as members of a community to help those who need it to make smart informed decisions about modifying their bike. When it comes to what kind of bike, if you dont want to see a particular scoot get cut up, put your wallet where your mouth is. Everythings for sale.

Guess I should be thankin Tim and others for the rope they've given me lately . I have been a bastich to a couple of noobs here but if you dig a lil deeper I did take the time to help in PM or later in the thread . If no one seems to mind I'll keep leaving visible bruises . It just seems to be in my nature .
I mean , who cuts a SOHC big 4 frame so they can do the head in the frame ? And I'm not talking about the well thought and made kits that make the frame rails removable . Then there was the classic flushing the XS crankcase w/ water to clean it . More common is the Valve adjust / Ignition timing tale . I don't mind repeating myself but there comes a point where I just can't resist attacking a noob , their immediate and extend family , several generations of ancestors , the family pet and girl (it appeared to be female) next door . In the end I'll help but I just can't seem to keep my hands off the clue-by-four .

...and tnx for the responses . I can't remember a post I've put up yet that I didn't learn something from ..

It was late and I was cocktailing.

I personally don't hack nice bikes but feel good about giving a true wreck a new life. however I don't care what others do with there own, its none of my business. As far as safety is concerned there have been hacks since the dawn of time. Buyer beware. Take care of yourself. Others personal responsibility is just that, their responsibility.

Its a nice place in life when you get there, where you are truly not concerned with what anyone else is doing. I can see that place and put a foot in it now and then. The whole fake punk thing and the kids born in the 90's thinking thew were so rad because they have a purple mohawk used to drive me crazy. But I really just don't care any more. I know who I am and what I am doing. I like to talk to others on that same track and try to learn something new every day. Thats been the best thing about this site for me. Lots of shared knowledge and friendships struck from all different walks of life. the reality is that if we all lived in the same place we probably would all get to know each other as well with all the different circles people walk in but the net allows all that to go away and what we all have in common to come forward.

Okay I'm done, sorry for the rant and thanks for provoking good discussion.

Purple mohawk isn't even close to killing someone by selling a piece of crap that was thrown together, particularly if a TV crew filmed it and made some losers 'instant experts'
Cafe Racer TV isn't what I thought it would be an is promoting some real bad builds
I've been really lucky and never actually seen anyone die, but, I knew a lot of people who ain't here any longer because they didn't want to hear the truth about modifications (and a bunch who just got in way over their heads on 100% 'safe' bikes)
DCC are not experts on bike building, Herm built his FIRST bike 3 yrs ago (it's on this site)
There are 'companies' out there jumping on bandwaggon throwing ace bars and oversize tyres on stuff that handled real bad when it was new and stock.
Because they got a spot on TV that makes it OK?
I'm getting really pissed with the retarded attitude of the majority
I have a lot of respect for Herm though as he admits his lack of knowledge
Anyone who's been on this site since I joined in 2008 knows my views about stupidly oversize tyres on narrow rims and even tell newbies not to do it now (I know Diesel450 fitted wider front rim to use wider tyre, went through thread this morning)
I don't like any of 'Benjie's cafe racers', but, he has a niche and was going a long time before the current fad (I'm just not a fan of CB750 in general and 16" rear wheel CB750 'custom' in particular)
That's my rant for now, Going to take some painkillers and see if I feel any better later

I try not to do anything without thinking of safety. Okay, yes I eliminate chain guards and bob fenders which are there in part for safety but I keep safety in mind as I'm planning. All I'm saying about the buyer beware thing is that fad or no fad there are guys hacking things up all over the place and making poor repairs etc. You always have to look after yourself.
