Another new project, CB77

Alright, I haven't posted too much in this forum up til now so I guess now's the time to start. I was working on a '67 Sears Gilera 106ss a few months ago, but decided to sell the bike and start with something a little different. I decided to go with the Honda CB77. I am a little bit of a snob when it comes to bikes and I like to work on stuff that requires me to order every part from another state or country! I know it sounds stupid, but the rarer the better for me.
So I purchased this bike today. I still have to wait for it to show up, but I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread anyway. It needs a lot of work, but that's what makes them fun right? I am wanting to build something in the resemblance of the factory CB77 racers from the 60's and 70's. Honda had a kit that could be purchased, in the 60's I believe, that came with a few performance mods like stiffer front springs, open velocity stacks, different shifter, clip-ons and a factory race seat, and that's what I'd like the bike to look like when I'm done. I'll include a picture of a nice racer below.
So, when the bike comes in next week, I'll start the tear down and see what I've got. I'll try and be as complete as I can with posts and pics, but I'll admit that I sometimes forget to grab a camera when I'm in the garage.

Here are a few pics the PO sent me.

And what I would like her to turn out

Re: Another new project

Good choice. There are lots of CB77s around and most are stock. The race kit was rare enough back in the day..

That red bike appears to have the correct race kit seat, mufflers look like replicas, intake stacks look right, but the footpegs don't look like race kit - not that it's an issue. Those race kit megaphones don't work too well and make a heck of a racket. Maybe get some almost as noisy Dunstall replicas. That motor responds well to a 350 kit and mild cam but needs a good set of valve springs to avoid valve float which eventually results in dropped valve heads.

5 speed trans is available from NOVA in the UK or I can sell you one that has never been run in a motor and is ready to go (not cheap though).

Good luck. I'll be following progress

Re: Another new project

I got lucky yesterday and found a factory race seat that has been sitting on a dream in a field for 20 years. I'll get it recovered as soon as it comes in the mail. The other parts I'm not quite sure where to about finding them. I'm sure it'll be a piece by piece ordeal.

Welcome to the forum and your new addiction :)

I'm doing a project CB77 this winter as well. Parts turn up on Ebay regulary. Seems to be quite a bit of recent actually. Here's some more inspiration for you:

As Teazer said, the actual race parts are going to be next to impossible to round up unless someone stumbles on a box in the back room somewhere. They were rare enough back then. I'm guessing you're more after the look than a period correct restoration? If so, the look can be accomplished if you're resourceful. I'll keep my eyes on this thread for updates. Be sure to keep them coming regularly so I don't get bored :D

You realize that the top surface of that seat is faux suede, yes? They look amazing and I seem to recall seeing a replica of that seat on fleabay

Yeah, I saw that one on Ebay for $1300 I believe. I'm glad I got mine cheap! I'm wanting to use the faux suede on the seat, but I was also thinking of doing a rising sun in the insert as well. Or maybe on the back of the seat.

I think I'm going for the look rather than a full correct race resto. If I went full race resto, I'm sure it would take me years to find everything I need.

Teazer follows this thread over at honda305.com but I thought I'd let you guys over here know whats going on.
When I got the bike the other day I found out the the engine was from a CA77 (dream) and not the CB77. I looked around on the internet and found a CB engine a few states over and ordered it. It should arrive today sometime.

As far as the bike goes, it's torn down to just the frame. I'll go and clean it in a bit and check for cracks or damage. I'll get pictures up asap.

I haven't been over here in a while, so I thought I'd drop by and give an update on my build. The frame was proving to be a little out of spec so I opted for another one. Then, it was new shocks, wiring, battery, rectifier, fender, taillight, tires, tubes, handlebars, and other misc. shit. Needless to say, I'm only using the tank, forks, and small parts off the original bike. Everything else is either new or from another bike.
I have a better build thread over at honda305 if anyone is interested.

It's not street, but it is trick...

That's my old 350 alky burning race bike for inspiration - as if you need any more of that :)

Please keep the updates coming. Looks like it will be a nice bike. BTW, my first CB72 back in about 1972 was a similar shade of baby blue.

That bike looks like its alot of fun! I'm pretty much done with the bike. Got everything cept a little bit of wiring left and I still need a headlight. I'm having clutch issues right now and I'm not sure why. I am going to put stock style levers on tomorrow and see if that fixes the issue. The guys over at the 305 think my levers may not be pulling enough.
I borrowed a seat to test her with. My seats still in Georgia gettin recovered.

Ok, I got my seat back from Joe. The change the seat makes is crazy! It really changes the whole appearance of the bike.

seat is very cool

That's one cool looking bike. I do agree that the look of that seat is the thing that makes it all happen. So that is a stock seat for the race kit? Awesome...
