Another tire size thread.

claygs750

Been Around the Block
I have a 80 GS750 with the rim sizes of:
Front: 1.85X19
Rear: 2.15X18

Tires from the PO that are installed now are:
Front: 100X90X19
Rear: 130X90X18

If I'm reading correctly the front tire is correct, but the rear tire should be 120 instead of 130. Is this correct? Looking at the 130 now it doesn't look too wide so would it be necessary to go down in size? Also, this will be my first cafe build so any recommendations on tire brands/types that have a vintage look, but good performance? Thanks

This is a good read for tires.
As for a "vintage" looking tire, just remember that nobody can tell what your tires look like when you are riding. You do plan to ride it, not park it right ;-)
I love the Bridgestone Battlax BT45's on my bike. Other people rave about Avon Roadriders. I have race compound Avon's on my racebike and they stick like glue...I imagine the road compound ones are similar.
Hope this somewhat helps........

it'll not only be wider but a bit taller in profile. as long as it rides well, and has no clearance issues I wouldn't be too concerned. I have no experience with tires for these older bikes, I've used street/track oriented tires like pilot powers, Dunlop qualifiers etc. they each act differently under hard riding.

You are correct, that rear tire is too wide for that rim. Skinny rims need skinny tires. In some cases it's possible to get away with wider tires but in general they are pinched out of shape and the bike doesn't handle as well as with narrower (correct) tires.
