Any GSXR experience?

I may inherit a '97 GSXR 750. It's been sitting for 7 years. The tank is rusted on top because it sat near a gutter that dripped on it. I'll take a deeper look when I can. Anyone have experience with these bikes? 120hp speed machines. Since there is rust on the tank, the seat is toast, and there is real paint issues, I want to strip it, and get as naked as possible. Ever pic I can find of modded gsxr's are pretty much streetfighers gone wild and crazy paint scheme sport style. I'm wondering if there is any subdued versions out there that anyone has pictures of? Something a bit more upright (street fighter without the extra gaudy.) In terms of stance, I was thinking mx bars, and a link for the rear to lower just a bit, to flatten it out some. Exposed underside with as flat a seat as possible (not thin, but flat.)

I love the 90's GSXR 750's, though if it were me, I would return it to its former glory:

I have no nostalgia for them, and I'm not particularly into sport bikes on the street, but I'm not turning down that motor! The body work is rough from sitting outside in the Miami sunshine, and the seat is toast. I don't want to buy the bodywork for it over again, so the route I prefer to take is naked....by necessity (although self determined necessity.)

I had a 97' for years that I used at trackdays and a couple of races at LRRS. The thing is a beast and though I had it on the street for a very short time it was nice to have all that horsepower. Let me know if you need anything on it, I might still have some parts in the garage. I know I don't have a tank but might have a battery tray under tray and other parts. I know I still have an Ohlins rear shock, wheels, carbs for it and aftermarket ECU.

thanks ricracer, I'll keep the offer in mind!

I'm going to see if the tires can take some air. If so, it will be rolled over to my house tonight. Then when I get a free moment, I'll take that carbs off, clean them up, hook up a battery, and see if I can get it to fire up.

I got ahold of an older sport bike a few months ago. It's turned into a fun little project. I've just gotten a new subframe welded on it, and am now working on a battery box, and a way to hide all the wires on it. I can't wait to get her on the road. Riding vintage is fun, but so is riding something with a little giddy up.

That's the idea J-Rod10! 120hp is way more than I need, but it will be fun to have.

Anyone have any good pictures of clean GSXR's?

I would probably build it closer to Bandit or new Katana style, although I've alays fancied making an off road (MX) version ;)

Thanks! I will post in here or pm the two of you when questions arise. I'll be rolling the bike over on Sunday. The other day didn't work out bringing it over.

What do you mean pj about Katana/Bandit style?

I find it really ironic that you want a "streetfighter without the gaudy," since I honestly didn't have much clue until recently that "streetfighter" now meant, well, what it seems to mean now.

In my mind, "streetfighter" will forever be a utilitarian, brutalist, stripped-down and rattlecan-flat-blacked style, born from situations like yours. Trashed/crashed bodywork on your sportbike? Just take it off. Headlights busted? Bolt on something from Autozone and get it running again. Throw some tubular dirtbike bars on for better urban hooliganism.

The original streetfighters were made in Europe in the mid 80's (initially in Britain cos everyone there is broke ;D )
Flat black was for wannabee's, mostly stock colours for most of them
The Germans first turned them into more 'art form' with the ass end jacked up to ridiculous proportions (they always seem to have too much money ::) )
There is no need to spend a ton of cash on paint, that's just following a fad (like cafe racers ain't? ;) )

From what I've gleaned, guys are drilling their top clamp, sandwiching plates to disperse load and adding risers to mount MX bars on the gsxr's and other bikes that don't have riser placement in their triples.

The '97 era frame is pretty ugly, and the tank looks massive. Everything about it is a little bulbous, so some creativity to slim it down in appearance will be needed. Loose plans after getting it running are cleaning up the subframe, and building a slimmer seat (or purchasing a slimmer seat) adding a single round headlight, adding risers and supermoto bars, and maybe a lowering link on the rear to flatten out the stance a little bit. The latter may not happen if it's not necessary.

Rolled the bike over this morning. My brother in law couldn't find the key so we just pushed it over and made sure the engine still turns over. I'll be tripping it down. Fork seals are totally shot, as is pretty much any exposed rubber. Tank is shot as well. Once he finds the key I'll see if I can get some fire then tear it all down, rebuild the cards, change all the fluid and see about starting it up.

It's the aerodynamics.
Take all the plastic off and use earlier stuff or make something (use early Katana and really scare people ;) )

I've owned two gixxers, a 95 750 and an '02 1k. I am a GSXR fan for life. Personally, I wouldn't strip it down at all, but make it a full on race rep, decals and all! But, that's just me.
