Coast to Coast
This might be an odd question but how did you come about getting that job? A while a ago my brother and I had a disagreement when it comes to getting hired for a construction job, my stance is that you need to know someone to get in there and he claims if you have the skills you can get hired. Most people I know that work in construction were refered by a family member, in-law or a friend, none had said they applied and got the job. Your thoughts??

Walk into the job trailer, and tell them you own a hammer or can push a broom. Good chance you'll get hired at somepoint as a laborer. From there its all up to you. If you work at it, you can move up through the ranks. If youre a bum, youll probobly get shitcanned when the next guy walks in.
The company I work for is a multi million dollar commercial construction business and we hire dudes off of the street all the time. Some have gone on to be Job Managers, some got the boot.
That said, small family owned businesses are more likely to only hire folks they know or are related to. Keep their money and trust in those closest to them.
The other option is to enroll in a training program (theres thousands of them) for carpentry, or elec, etc... Thats a gurantee that youll find a job at some point. May take a bit, but someone will hire you.
All that said, if you work hard, and get it done, theres a lot of money to be made in the industry.

ditto what von said..residential construction, you work for the positions and work your way up from clean up on. Be prepared to take grief and bust your a$$. Biggest thing in residential is being on time and WORKING hard.

Commercial is a different animal..depends on union or non, trade and so on.

I've been in the industry 18 years starting at the bottom working up, and got a degree in construction management.

You are both correct...but anyone will hire a motivated, non smart mouthed kid. It just so happens my dad does construction...he said this is a sure fire way to get a job.

Just walk onto the job site, tell them you want a job, and you dont care what you have to do..
Tell them you will work for a whole day for free and do anything you are asked of....and if they like what they see they can hire you.

My dad has a very high success rate with that trick.

it always helps to know someone no matter what you do, but it's not essential in this case... my dad owns his own electrical contracting business & he hires off the street all the time... look decent, be persistent & polite, but not a sissy... show them that you're interested.

Yep, my dad runs a construction company. Be a hard worker at all times. Don't be retarded. AND SHUT YOUR GODDAMN MOUTH UNTIL YOU'RE IN A SUPERVISORY POSITION. ...You'll do just fine.

Did highway conscruction for a summer, I knew a guy on the crew.

That said lots of guys working that job just applied for it when it was posted in the paper.
