Anyone know a site dosumenting a CB/CL 175 engine rebuild

Been Around the Block
I've started tearing mine down to replace all the seals, clean it up and make sure the pistons. walls and rings are good. Anyone know of any sites documenting the engine portion of a build?

Not that I'm aware of, but there was a page I found before that could be described as a blog. I believe I linked it in the "small honda builds".

Is there a particular part that is giving you a problem?

Right now stripped out screws on both case covers and the oil filter screw is stripped out! I need to get an extractor set and go to town, but this will only be my second time in a bike motor and I don't want to screw it up. I do best with visuals but I'll search for that link.

Yuck.

I don't remember that link I'm thinking of having a lot of pictures, but it's been awhile.

I do have a spare 71 175 motor out in the garage (vast majority of it anyways) so if you need a part, let me know.

Yuck indeed. I will do, but it might be a bit. Unemployment isn't treating me so well. But If I need a part, I'll definitely shoot you a message

The Honda manual is excellent as a guide when rebuilding your engine.
There is not that much to them, but odds are you will need a new cam chain tensioner.
If you can't find a guide etc, just ask as many questions as you need here.

There are a few of us that have rebuilt these motors and all the members here are MORE than helpful.

Love this site.

Cheers.

I've got a poorly copied manual I bought on Ebay after getting the bike. My fault, I didn't find the one place at the very bottom stated it was a copy and not original. Photos are real dark and hard to see, and I'll read repeatedly without stuff sinking in. But I'll pull it out again today, and see if I can't get a better grasp. Otherwise once I get the case apart I'll be posting tons of questions.

When you're ready, ask away.
Big R answers almost every thread on here ! :D
And I'll keep an eye out as I have rebuilt my 175 motor also.

Cheers.

Alright guys, I'm ready to start questioning.

The cylinder head is off. Lots of build up on the pistons and chambers.

I can't seem to get the breaker point base seperated from the camshaft. I can slide it away from the head and it just pulls the camshaft with it. Is it press fit on the the end and I just need to pull and pry as hard as I can, or am I missing something?

Do I need a special valve spring compressor to get the valves off or can I pick up a generic one from Sears or so and get by?

Oh, oil filter cap is won't budge. It just pulls off right? My pliers seem to just be putting gashes in the aluminum tabs (btw, screw is now out).

I can't remember how the cam is settled in there but can take a look in the morning if you want.

There's actually an article on GroupW's site about the oil filter - I can't remember the details, but something about pulling the 6mm bolt out and using an 8mm to push the filter off. Check their site for the nitty gritty.

Yep, if you thread an 8mm bolt down the guts of the oil filter it will push it off when it bottoms out.

The points housing should just slide right off when everything, including the mechanical advance unit, has been removed. I will check my rebuild pictures to make sure for you.

For a valve spring compressor, I used a normal G clamp with an old socket tack wlded to one end with a third of the socket cut away to grant access to the retaining collets. Hope that makes sense, I will try and finds pics and get back to you.
You can almost push the valve down by hand on these lil 175's. :)

Cheers.

Just to make sure, you need to remove the centre bolt holding the mech advance unit on, remove that, then the four outer bolts/screws and it should slide right off. That housing acts as a cam bearing so be careful getting it off.

Yep, all the bolts are removed. It just pulls the cam with it, and I don't want to ruin the cam. From what I can see, it looks to be in good shape.

Awesome link! Bookmarked for reference. Danke!

Did the motor turn over OK before you started to strip it?
If so, that points housing should slip off. You may need to pry it off the Cam gently. Thats about all I can offer.

Maybe post a pic and we may spot something that way.

Good luck.

Motor turned over fine. I'll try being more persuasive. I can be overly paranoid about damaging parts. If I don't see any progress I'll add some pictures when I'm on my computer instead of my phone.

Just make sure you pry it off square.
You could also try digging the seal out first to get a better look in there.

That cover should slide right off.
You may have to remove the 'knock pin' driving advancer mechanism (haven't had a 175 since 1974 ish)

Nah, slides right over that little pin. :)

Some pictures of my tear down. Sorry about picture quality, it's an old 2 megapixel camera and it was late and poor lighting in the garage.

One piston has obviously been cleaned a little bit

There's the last stripped screw, still need to get an e-z-out

Some deterioration, I'm assuming I should replace it?

old, and what will be new

Got one side cover off. I had let it sit on the oil drain for a good half hour, crack it open, and it looks like BP went drilling for oil in my garage

After a few minutes of cleaning with a tooth brush... damn that carbon build up is tough. :(
