self destruct button??? Ejector seat? Seriously, I have no idea. But the bracket under it resembles the one on my engine chain tensioner on my cb750.

I think its a "speed warning light" and it would light up at a specific MPH to alert the driver.
I have seen them mounted on the "rhino horn" gauge mount on the early 750 sandcast. They are probably specific to certain markets (Japan? UK ?) and weren't installed on all models.

It could simply be an add-on to cover the hole in steering stem. My VFR750 came with one that is black plastic.

yeah i dont know. for what its worth, i came across another bike with the same light, this was a euro model, the one in the pic is a japanese model. i checked the parts list (domestic I think) and its not shown....I've seen it a few times so i dont think its an aftermarket thing....
