bit of an intro here as well.
my names ned and im from melbourne vic. i ended up buying Julians 84 Xl350R tracker bike. im now in the process of getting it re-registered and changing a few things.

now the headlight he bought for it is a chrome plastic bucket, bout 6.5" diameter and unfortuantely not road legal. anyway my confusion lies in the mounting bracket it utilizes. it has a lug with two mount holes running up the bottom of the bucket.
after all my searching for a black 5 3/4 headlight, ive not found a mounting system like it.

That's an odd headlight... I've never seen one like it (maybe I need to get out more? )

You might have to modify the bracket or fabricate a new one to be able to utilize a more "regular" headlight (bottom mount?), or run with the one you've got... how picky are they about illegal headlights in Melbourne? ;)

yeah I thought It was a but of a rarity. its actually quite a good idea...very solid compared to bates mount. im assuming that a standard bates will bolt into the hole on the lower triple that this contraption was bolted to.

for rego they are picky. needs to have some kind of E mark or euro approval on the lens. the lens in itnow is plastic and a crappy motorcycle bulb. ive ordered a 5 3/4 with glass lens and a H4 bulb. in black cause im not a fan of chrome

Looks more like the spotlight or driving light type. Like you would fit to a bull bar.

As indicated above it is for a Magna and similar Honda street bike. There may also be a Suzuki of that vintage that used it. It is a Stanley item stock and uses a road legal H-4 Halogen bulb.

Here is an aftermarket version - don't know if it carries the needed stamp: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Headlight-Lamp-for-Rebel-CA250-Steed-400-Magna-400-/151001093780

Here is a stock setup complete which would be legal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1998-Honda-Magna-VF750C-Headlight-Rim-Trim-Ring-Assembly-Complete-w-Light-/221238943964

It is off of a bike like this:

I'm so happy i live in Netherlands. No trouble with legal headlights, braided brakelines, rim changes or frame mods... Could you really get a ticket for riding with that headlight? I doubt there's any cop who knows wich headlight goes on wich bike. And the one that does know is a wrencher himself so wont give you a ticket right?

It's the ADR (Australian design rules).

Not only does the product have to comply to a design standard, it has to be physically (and permanently) marked with a note saying it is compliant to that standard.

So the only defect of the light may be that it is not marked correctly.

Same goes for seat belts (cars), tyres, rear vision mirrors, indicators, helmets etc.

You could get the best helmet money can buy in USA/UK, but wearing it in Oz is illegal (if no stamp/label).

You wouldn't think the official helmet dealers would take advantage of this would you ;)

whoa ako, are you implying that our beloved helmet resellers are only here to take advantage of an outdated government blunder 20years ago to gouge us for a sub par selection of helmets whicb are identical to helmets sold everywhere else in the world??

haha you have no idea how much the subject of helmets grates my gears! !! all I want is a biltwell gringo! its DOT but doesn't have a hidoeus chrome and red sticker so its not safe!

Not suggesting anyone break the law, but often, in the states, requiring DOT helmets, many of the Pirate Class of rider like to buy novelty helmets that have no real protection. They peel the DOT sticker off a real helmet and apply it to said novelty helmet.

The motivation for this forgets the protection aspect, but I wonder if other countries have this issue? Like Australia? ;D

oh yes theyve thought of every conceivable way of protecting there money making scheme. and money making it is! costs can be up to $40000 per helmet model to get "certified"

our helmets also now have to have a soft patch sown into the liner stating year of manufacture and make/model of helmet. also our stickers are those pesky ones that if you dont get a clean take off, it rips and a "void" is visible in the sticker.
