Aussie Polisher wanting a career change.. My love of Cafe's n Trackers

MattysShineShop

Hi I'm Matt!
Well where do i start without sounding like a spammer??!! I have worked as a Metal Polisher since i was 17 (13 years now) and self employed for 7. I have loved belting the cr@p out of metal (ie building random stuff out of alloy) on the side but have never had the confidence to charge and my excuse was that "Id be a fabricator if i could earn the money i can polishing" . I love fab that much i own a miller syncrowave 310 tig , Bandsaw, tube rollers etc etc just for emergencys!

In the past year or so i have been polishing Alloy bike tanks for a bloke named Burnie Willett. Im sure there would be a few blokes who have heard that name around here. His work is amazing to say the least. When he brought the first tank i was jealous of his 50+ years experiance as a metal master! He looked at the many unfinished projects laying around my factory and pumped my tires up about the work i do. He actually seemed impressed!

Lately the polishing has been a little quiet so ive been hassling Burnie if i can come over for a day and have a look and get some tips for metal shaping and welding etc. He dropped some scraps and some pure alloy welding filler rods around the other day and said have a practice and come around in a few weeks when hes not so under the pump.

He visited me today as he was in the area and i showed him my fullsize tracker seat and a few other bits and pieces i made with he's scrap. He was happy with my fabrication and the tig welds and told me to go for it. Im still not keen on tanks as yet as the have to be pressure tested etc but Cafe and tracker seat bases would be safe to build.

So here i am, New business venture. If anyone needs a seat base fab'd, welded and polished in Melbourne Australia I'd be happy to have a play around and learn for minimal fee. feel free to send me a pm or "like" https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Mattys-Shine-Shop-Pro-Metal-Polishing/152527904831097?bookmark_t=page

Wow, those looks amazing. I'm looking at getting a seatbase for my brat/cafe GS750 done. I'm also in Melbourne. Any suggestions, would definately be interested in you making it, from your pics you do have the knack for it.

Sounds great Koff. Do you have a link to your project? I would be super keen to have a play around for you. I also have a heap of other designs but the're all a smaller scale as i didnt have the material. No pics either!

Cheers, Matt

I havent set up a project link post yet, just my introduction post. Which is here, it has some pics of it. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=33639.msg363031#msg363031

I'll also attach a latest pic of the bike with a seat I received with the bike, I don't like the seat hence I wont be using it and hence why I need a seat pan. Would love only a small bump at the back instead of the huge thing that the seat here shows. and I would also like to have the seat a lot narrower, the width of the frame maybe a cm or two over, the current seat is nearly half as wide again.

Might use your polishing skills to polish up the bits that im stripping paint from, such as the triple trees and bar mounts. I think this is going to get expensive. hehehe

Here is a prototype practice seat pan i have been working on. Its a budget unit- Very plain and simple. Dimensions are- 650mm long (can be shortened) 200mm Wide and 60 from seat base to the top of the hump. As i said im still learning and there are things that i would change, but had to make do using scraps. Cheers, Matt

Heya again mate.

How much would that seat pan cost ? the 650mm long one. I need to get dimensions of my bike, not sure how much of the frame im cutting off at the end yet but i am really interested in that.

Cheers

Koff

Just wanted to say good luck to you. You sound passionate and the work that is going on around you looks incredible. Stay with it, wish I could give you some business.

Hi Koff, I have them on for $299, But if your anywhere near bayswater vic swing around with your bike a few beers and a few bob for materials and we will call it sort of a sponsorship. The feedback, Pics ill get and praise via word of mouth will far outweigh the extra couple of hungy i would sting you ;) .

Fuggers, Cheers for that mate. This is something i need to do as being a full time polisher is the dirtiest, labour intensive job around (I polish bullbars Mainly), and the fact that no one is buying trucks in Australia at the moment means im slipping into a bit of a hole.

If you want to check out some of my other work-

Cheers! :)
