greetings. i just typed a very in depth entry only to accidentally delete it :-\ this is my first post i have just picked up a suzuki gsx 250 1981. this is my first bike i have been riding and working on non motorized two wheeled vehicles for many years. i just got back to australia after spending 2 years living and working in whistler canada, did a lot of mountain biking skiing there.
anyway back to bikes. i have been looking to get a bike for quite a few months now and have been trawling ebay/ gumtree (Australian craigslist) everyday for the past few months and have missed out on a few gems but then managed to find a listing for this bike on the gold coast which is only about 45 mins from my house. i contacted the owner and he told me that there was a fair bit of interest in the bike so i wanted to have a look at it asap. i unfortunately had to work that evening that the owner was free and out of fear of not being able to cope mentally with missing out on another bike i talked to my dad and he offered to go look at it for me.
the bike was in so so shape, there was some faulty wiring which had resulted in a fire to start under the seat. the fire caused a bit of damage to the side covers, seat, airbox and unfortunately a fair bit of wiring. it also had a rust hole in one of the exhaust headers and needed some work on other areas.
i bought the bike, i paid $900 and the PO delivered it to my front door. i plan on getting it running and registered and then i will think about the cosmetics.
i have not decided 100% on what style of bike i want it to be but i am leaning towards the tracker style at the moment. renthal ultra lows, bare metal tank, shinko 705 dual sport tires, flat brown seat and just clean everything up.
i have downloaded the carb manual and pulled them out tonight, the fire burnt the fuel line but otherwise everything else is there. they are looking a bit grimey, i was planning on using the lemon juice method that i had read about on this site. basically just boiling the carb bodies in a 1/6 lemon juice water mixture, has anyone tried this method before is it a good idea?
i have not worked on motorbikes before but i am fortunate enough that my dad wants to help me with this project and he knows his stuff when it comes to bikes.
this is going to be a budget build as the bank account isnt exactly 'overflowing' at the moment, so i plan to reuse, repair, recycle as much as possible.
i cant think of anything else at the moment but i will update as i go.
cheers elliot. out of brisbane

Hi scrambledeggs. Good to see another Aussie on here. Please keep us up to date on the Australian cafe racer forum too.

I've used the kemp juice method and yes it works. Having said that, I've just heard about a threebond product that beats the hell out of carb cleaner.. Anyone know the name?

Best of luck with the build and with brisbane's ever growing cafe racer community at least you're in good company!

Hey Scrambledpegs, I'm using photobucket for my pics if that helps... I'm in Brizzy too we should go for a ride....when both our bikes are done ;)

Good luck with the project, they're great little bikes but then I'm biased towards these little twins. Dirt cheap, easy to fix and respond well to being thrashed. Looking forward to the pics.
