greetings. i just typed a very in depth entry only to accidentally delete it :-\ this is my first post i have just picked up a suzuki gsx 250 1981. this is my first bike i have been riding and working on non motorized two wheeled vehicles for many years. i just got back to australia after spending 2 years living and working in whistler canada, did a lot of mountain biking skiing there.
anyway back to bikes. i have been looking to get a bike for quite a few months now and have been trawling ebay/ gumtree (Australian craigslist) everyday for the past few months and have missed out on a few gems but then managed to find a listing for this bike on the gold coast which is only about 45 mins from my house. i contacted the owner and he told me that there was a fair bit of interest in the bike so i wanted to have a look at it asap. i unfortunately had to work that evening that the owner was free and out of fear of not being able to cope mentally with missing out on another bike i talked to my dad and he offered to go look at it for me.
the bike was in so so shape, there was some faulty wiring which had resulted in a fire to start under the seat. the fire caused a bit of damage to the side covers, seat, airbox and unfortunately a fair bit of wiring. it also had a rust hole in one of the exhaust headers and needed some work on other areas.
i bought the bike, i paid $900 and the PO delivered it to my front door. i plan on getting it running and registered and then i will think about the cosmetics.
i have not decided 100% on what style of bike i want it to be but i am leaning towards the tracker style at the moment. renthal ultra lows, bare metal tank, shinko 705 dual sport tires, flat brown seat and just clean everything up.
i have downloaded the carb manual and pulled them out tonight, the fire burnt the fuel line but otherwise everything else is there. they are looking a bit grimey, i was planning on using the lemon juice method that i had read about on this site. basically just boiling the carb bodies in a 1/6 lemon juice water mixture, has anyone tried this method before is it a good idea?
i have not worked on motorbikes before but i am fortunate enough that my dad wants to help me with this project and he knows his stuff when it comes to bikes.
this is going to be a budget build as the bank account isnt exactly 'overflowing' at the moment, so i plan to reuse, repair, recycle as much as possible.
i cant think of anything else at the moment but i will update as i go.
