Got everything done on the KZ, took it out and loud noise from timing chain/tensioner developed. Looks like bad news.....

Have you adjusted it recently? They are known to stick sometimes too. Have you taken it out for a look?

What year and model. Also what size. I have rebuilt three KZ's this summer. Did you tighten the two ten MM bolts in the cam valley?? Also did you put red lock tight on your cam tensioner gear on the top of the head between the cams.

Mine has a weird sort of rattle sound.. seems to be common.. Don't know if it's a good sound or bad.. but if it's the same as mine, we aren't alone. I haven't tore into it yet to see.

Fall is a much better time to be having engine trouble than spring. If it is a big problem, at least you have the winter to work on it.

It's a 81 KZ750 LTD. From what I have been told, apparently the early models of this year had a problem that was part of a factory recall. I was also told that all of the adjustment room is gone and the only fix is to tear down the motor and replace it all. If anyone knows any differently, I'm all ears.... This bike is all but finished, and if I have to tear it all down, I think I'd rather stop. Too much money...

The main chain is very sloppy and hitting the case (hence the metal particles we found. All plug holes need to be heli-coiled, there is smoke from #3, it really looks bad for this engine. I think the best course of action at this point is to wait around for a wrecked bike with a good motor. Been riding the other 750 around, and it's really great. Not scary, but plenty of power anytime you twist the throttle. Feels nice. I would love to find another Kaw 750 motor, but anything comparable will do...... if anyone comes across a local complete engine that is known to be in good working order, let me know....
