Ball bearings to bearing race?

Hi,

This is more of a frame related question but I couldn't figure out where to post it. Feel free to move.

Does anyone know anything about switching from ball bearings in the top/bottom of the headstock to a bearing race?

It's not something I had heard of, but having a new yoke/stem etc machined and I was asked what I was using, for one of the dimensions I need to confirm.

So apparently a race is one of these:

Any ideas about how to choose the correct race? Should the size of the original bearings dictate the bearing race size?

Is a race better than standard ball bearings?

Ah I think I got my terminology wrong having looking into it a bit further. Tapered would be the right upgrade.

Does anyone know if there is a conversion kit for a 74 CB200?
