basic tools?

so I'm new to the motorcycle world, picking up a set of cb450's next week to do a build. I've done automotive builds so I have a good set of mechanic tools, but are there and "must have" tools for motorcycles? Only thing I have so far is a jack.

Two that come to mind are a chain breaker and a carb balancing tool. Motion Pro makes decent examples of both.

Anything worth working on will be metric (I'd better duck and cover now). If you've got a good pile of car tools, you should be set. An impact driver is good because those crappy panhead case screws tend to strip out and turn a quick project into a long one. After you get them out, replace them with stainless or chrome socket heads. You can get bolt kits for just about anything on eBay.

I was pretty much in the same boat not too long ago. A Honda will mean metric sized bolts, nuts, etc. So I suggest:

Ratchet and socket set in metric (hopefully including a breaker bar which is a must have).
A metric combination wrench set.
Screwdriver set (including stubbies if possible)
Impact driver (must have for taking somethings apart)
Allen wrenches set
Torque wrench
Ball Pein hammer
Rubber mallet
Various pliers and vicegrips
Punches
Feeler gauge
Hacksaw
Blow Torch
Pullers
Micrometer
Multimeter
Vernier Caliper
Dial Indicator
Compression tester
Vacuum gauge
Gloves
Cleaning and polishing clothes
Protective eyewear
Some kinda filter mask
Plastic baggies (good for keeping track of nuts, bolts, washers)
Metal cleaner and polisher of choice
First Aid kit

That's all i can think of at the moment. Some of these items are optional depending on how much work you wanna do yourself.

A multimeter, or at least something that checks continuity. You WILL be diagnosing electrical issues.

If they are the older CB450s (68-74) they do not have vacuum ports on the carbs so you can't use a carb sync tool. However, you can modify the bike to add the ports if you want.

good list so far, the bike are both '72... its all still in theory since they can still get sold from under me. Works got me tied up right now. I also got a welder added to my list, but thats always been on the list since I've left all of mine down in texas
