battery not charging?

help!

i am just getting my '75 CB400F finished and roadworthy for the season and it seems it won't charge the battery?

battery is brand new.

i'm thinking it has to be the stator/alternator.

is there a way to "test" mine to be sure? is there a way to fix it if its bad? and if not, anyplace besides ebay to find a good one online?

i am leaving for vacation tonight and would love to order what i may need before i leave so it can be here when i get back home...

help?

Not sure of the exact tests for the CB400F, but you normally test the resistance between the copper rings on the rotor and there are tests for the regulator and rectifier, items which can impact charging. I'm sure if you Google a bit you'll find the proper test methods for the 400, if someone here doesn't chime in with the specifics.

Do you have a multimeter? If not buy one. Check voltage at the battery when the bike is running - should be 13-14v. Don't assume your brand new battery is good either, but test the other components too.

just talked with some guys at our local Mods Vs. Rockers event and they all said to check the regulator first.

they seem smart, so it would seem to be sage advice.

you all seem smart too. so it seems like a good idea to run that by you all as well.....

ok, here's where it sits as of yesterday:

has a new Yuasa battery, and i bought and installed an all electric regulator from the guy at Oregon Motor something or other.

i checked the voltage according to instructions and was getting 13.6 between the negative battery terminal and the hot wire to my rectifier.

i thought i was good to go.... i know to ride at higher RPM's if i'm just tooling around on short rides. after a full charge and two rides of 5 minutes at 5500 RPM, i let it sit for a few days.

hop on and DEAD BATTERY AGAIN.

i have eliminated the run/stop switch so it is hot when the key is turned, and also straight wired my headlight to be on whenever the key is in the on position.

someone told me that there is a way to wire the headlight into the stator and not the battery so that it comes on when the bike is started and not when the key is turned?

where do i go from here?

i have no blinkers or horn, hell...i don't even light up my gauge faces.

any ideas or suggestions?

take off the negative cable and put the multimeter inline. seems to me you have a draw somewhere in the wiring...
