I have a 77 kz650b. I have removed stock battery box. I want to place a new battery under hump of cafe seat. The stock battery is just too big. I also would like to lay it on its side. I am running stock ignition and charging system for now. I want it small enough where I may be able to fit rectifier regulator and fuse block under as well. To get an idea of hump size, I can tuck the stock battery in there at about a 45 degree angle and make it flush with bottom of pan.

There wasn't any direct question but I'm assuming you are asking for battery suggestions. If you're willing to pay the piper, consider Anti-Gravity, Shorai or Ballistic. I believe all are some version of LiPo type batteries. All can be mounted any position, lighter, smaller and dry.
 
On this subject, for my 73 CB350, will the 4-cell Anti-Gravity have enough CCA (120 vs. 165 stock) if I keep the starter and use LED lights?
 
I understand that; my question is, will it be sufficient? A battery that small would fit neatly between the framerails. I see now the Antigravity website says it's for street motorcycles up to 450cc, so that should work, I'd think.
 
I have looked at the three batteries you recommended. All seem that they would do the trick, can anyone recommend wich one is best for my street 650? I want the smallest possible, but best cranking power. We all know how those old ignition systems are. :-\
 
Sorry, no FHE on these batteries. But yes, theoretically, it's enough. Just understand the consequences. Other than the cranking speed, it will drain faster or charge slower under riding conditions. Lowering your system load (LED lights) helps. Follow the mfg charging rate and keep it on a charger between rides. Try to get an idea of the discharge rate. Also, you don't want to overcharge them. A $100 battery is reason enough to be cautious. I've heard some having a battery die mid-ride. So just monitor the voltage. Don't assume it's good because it's new.

I plan on getting one of these. That's why I recommended it. Just search here. I believe there are reports of these batteries from owners. Also, you can simply contact them for their advice.

Between the Shorai and AG, they both are LiPo but use the different cell technology. AG even mentions Shorai in its FAQ section. I didn't research Ballistic but they are lower cost and have a scooter version (4 ah) for $50.
 
I just bought a Ballistic.I hope it is a good choice.I do think all 3 are good choices though.
 
any updates on the new battery?

i'll be looking to "down size" in the near future. i've ran a moty design 4 cell on my gsxr race bike, but never used one on a daily tracker. my bike has no turn signals and will be kick start only...i'm guessing i won't need much.
 
I also suggest the mfg specific battery charger, if you can swing the extra cost. The Tender can be used occasionally but the specific charger has feedback thru a mulit-pin connector to optimally charge or maintain the battery (at least for the Shorai).
 
I think Odyssey dry batteries kick out more power for a smaller size, expensive though.

Yes, it will work fine, it just won't work as long.
You need to make sure everything is set up right and bike starts without excessive cranking.
You only need about 45~80 CCA but that wouod probably give you max of about 5~20 sec cranking.
Higher CCA gives more reserve
 
You need about 60~75amps to get starter turning then about 40~50amps to keep it turning. If you've ever used jumper leads, you'll know they get warm when cranking an engine. The leads coming off that battery will probably melt if you try electric start
 
Its also been suggested that we upgrade to a modern elec reg/rect when using these li ion batteries. The 77b1 had a different charging system than other kz's.
