beater's kz400 build - video up!

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

I like it. works well with the tail.

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

well, for better or worse - the fairing is mounted up. I made up a mount to the head tube, and figured that if nothing else, if I change to no fairing, it won't be in the way. I can also use the fairing support as a base for a mount on another fairing if I decide to go that direction.

I welded in mounts for the stock instrument cluster, and filled in some of the shoddy drunken italian welding from the ducati factory.

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

I reckon thats ace! Gives the whole bike a swoopy, fast look with it on. Hell, didn't even look too bad with just the headlight.

Hope the rest of the build goes well - boingk

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

well did a bunch of stuff pics won't show.

Finalized the seat pan mounting, just gotta get the tank more secure now.

I also welded in some steering stops in case I run a fairing on the head tube. I also one an sv650 quarter fairing on ebay, so we'll see how that goes. It's the old school round light kind.

Fabbed up the carb cables and got the 1/4 race throttle on. The r1 unit doesn't work as posted before. I got a 1/4 turn throttle, pro-grips (track compound) and motion pro cables (that I had to shorten the push cable on) for 19 bucks on ebay. I also got the master cylinder mounted. Yes, that's a conduit clamp.

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

well, it runs. I got a wild hair in the last few days to hear the exhaust. I will try and get a video up on it, but it sounds pretty cool. No baffle, no packing, just two into one, with a cocktail shaker tip. I left the strainer in the cap (the holes hold the ice in) and that combined with the 1.5 inch opening seems to give a fair amount of back pressure. my overall exhaust length is only about 40", so I was concerned on the back pressure.

I did find a break in the main ground wire (oh joy) so that means a few hours tracing and replacing... I HATE ELECTRICAL.

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

Great build so far.
Love where your KZ is heading.
Either fairing will be a bonus at speed.
Will the SV fairing be frame mounted as well?
Much better to prevent the wind from steering your bike.

I had the swingarm braced on my KZ and noticed improvements mostly going over bumps at highway speeds.
She feels much more stable.

I also have problems with the kickstarter hitting the rearsets I have on.
I have kept the electric starter and use it 99% of the time, but did need to use the kicker when I accidently drained the battery too much riding with extra driving lights at low speed. Stopped for pix, and the elec wouldn't work.
he pegs I have (GSXR600) are held in with a pin and clip, so it's easy to pull the pin and remove the peg. Kick and we're off.

Keep the progress pixs coming, and yeah, toss up a video.
Love to hear her run. 8)

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

Hey! This thing is looking great. Its really come a long way since I saw it last. Cant wait to see the final product.

Re: beater's kz400 build - first cafe - critique opinions please

ducati fairing - OUT

suzuki xv650 fairing - IN

outside progress pics - I like it much better. Remember there's an inch of padding going on the seat yet. It's a little Ness'ish (which I am sure will piss off my brother) but I think it flow's better than the duc fairing. It's frame mounted also, so no wind issues on steering. I rode it today, believe it or not, it's running rich with stock jetting, pods, and my custom pipe. I think the pipe is too restrictive, but if I do a bigger opening with no core, it will be way toooooo loud.

Coming along nicely but I think you should try again with the fairing.

Re: beater's kz400 build - fairing change- critique opinions please

not much to report. got some vm34 carbs off a banshee, put together a h4 7" headlight from the junkyard and trying to figure out how to get the bucket into the fairing.

waiting for the carbs to get here then we'll see how they fire up. Probably have to make yet another throttle cable...meh

Re: beater's kz400 build - fairing change- critique opinions please

put together a h4 headlight 7" out of the junk yard, and got the vm's on. Ran like crap, couldn't figure it out, then had an epiphany. I had forgot to bench sync the cables. Built a new throttle cable and such and all is well now. Got flames from a fuel rich backfire lol...Waiting for a new set of needles, I am going to start with 200 mains, p8 needle, and 6dh2 on the needle. The real drag is these carbs didn't come off a banshee like the guy on flea bay said. Came off of a polaris snowmobile.. oh well, who needs float overflows... lol

Re: beater's kz400 build - fairing change- critique opinions please

new fairing looks great man! has a very cool flow to it!

Re: beater's kz400 build - vm34's on

man this thing is almost as smoky as a 2-stroke...

Got the 6dh2 needles in, and the carbs bench sync'd. I also wired up the accel coil, and oh man, did THAT make a difference. The spark was twice as bright!

on the carbs, weird thing, the kz900 boots are supposed to work on the vm34's, but um, they don't. The stock kz400 ones work on the first rib, but not all the way in. Good seal though, at least with the carb cleaner check.

I am getting a hunt at idle, but for right now I am chalking that up to fuel flow and ultra lean on idle with no filters. The 200 mains seem spot on, but it's a bit rich on the needle (on the second clip) as sudden throttle kills it, but winding it up gradual works well. It sounds completely different with the vm's compared to the cv's. Tons louder at the exhaust. I also chalk that up to more spark. Thing rev's like nobody's business, but like I said, is a little blue smokish. I haven't dug into the valves yet, nor have I changed the oil.

i have an extra coil if anyone needs a 3 ohm dual output w/wires!

Here's a corny vid:

Re: beater's kz400 build - vm34's on

I wonder if I can make that coil work on my 350? Would save some weight having one coil. Hmmm...

Re: beater's kz400 build - vm34's on

little more playing around. Got the floats reset to 22mm, less hunting on idle. Now rich on the idle circut. Guess I need to get the pilots straightened out. Did I mention i HATE carbs...

I think I need new rear shoes...

A little venting.. the kz400 rear cover doesn't lend itself to speed holes but this will match the clutch cover somewhat.

put that big ole headlight on just to see what it looks like without a fairing.

Re: beater's kz400 build - vm34's on

ok - so it's kinda plagerism, but I think I have found my color scheme...

Re: beater's kz400 build - swingarm done!

decided mock-up was done

swing arm is now completely welded. marks on front brace were going to be for some holes, but I decided against it due to possible increased flex.

the bike is in a box now..

Re: beater's kz400 build - swingarm welded up

Looks really good, I like the cross bracing on your frame as well. nice tidy work.
