Bellytankers... How I love thee!

Many Honda car engines spin the wrong way. Personally, I would go with a bike engine and run it directly to a car differential. PM me your phone number and I'll explain how this is done. If you look around enough, complete FI bike engines can be had for less that $1k You could do this project safely for $2-2.5k.

chris, do you know which honda engines spin the wrong way off hand? i know the f20c (s2000) motor does, but the tsx rsx motors don't.
i'm just curious.

Go over to landracing.com and click on the build diaries. There are two threads on bellytank builds. One being built in Australia and one in Norway (of all places!!). A lot of waffle but some interesting photos of the builds.

I'm by no means a Honda car engine expert. That said, all the B-series spin backwards, as do all the FWD Honda engines. The S2000 spins the correct way.

Great stuff :)

Rotaries ought to be a good idea but SCTA rules handicap them (they don't think they do, but they do. They should have a 2x displacement multiplier but the SCTA gives them 3x.).

My neighbor back home has one. His grandad built it after the war and dropped a 4 cyl. in it. They called it the rocket and he had quite a reputation. We used to play in it as kids and hatch up big plans to rebuild it one day.

FYI: If you're using a VW transaxle, yo ucan swap the differential to suit whatever rotation your chosen engine has.

I gotta say though, a biken engine really is a good idea...

Ya VW trans axles are great for custom stuff. You can do just about anything with them, and get adapters to run just about any damn motor out there. Even American V8s. After talking with Chris the other day Im really leaning towards a MC engine though. I may be able to pick up a Honda CBR1000 powerplant locally for almost nothing. Waiting to hear back from a buddy who has a line on it.

Dude no! Grab yourself a CB500/550/650 chassis adn sling that beast in there!
Aluminum radiator under the seat etc... Booyah!

This has to go here:

Interesting device. As the piece says, not sure if its the genuine article or a good replica. If it is a replica its pretty good. Looks like it has 'T' frame rails. Its th sort of thing you take to Bonneville for Speed Week and park it at Bend in the Road for all to see. There is no way it could run at any Bonneville or El Mirage meet. The problem would be that it has no history and probably would be laughed at as a fake. Show it most anywhere else and it might be appreciated.

Why would anyone laugh at it as fake? If ya build a period style car, using period correct pieces, than your not faking anything, your just building a period correct race car. Unless the builder tried to blow a bunch of smoke up everyones asses and say it was originally built in 52' or something I would imagine the Bonneville or ElMirage diehards would love it!

Don't know much about Belly tanks but this came up on a quick Google search for an idea to make the tank from composites. The whole "two canoes glued together" thing might be the most logical choice. It seems that the original car was made with a budget similar to yours, although there seemed to be more materials to work with.

Maybe I worded it wrong. If you go to Bonneville or El Mirage you will see rat rods everywhere. At Bonneville there are an awful of them that are trailered in and driven only on the salt because they aren't street legal or registered. At El Mirage 99% of the rat rods there are driven to the event and driven home. They rate a lot higher on the respect scale.

At Bonneville Speed Week a couple of years ago there was a couple of bellytankers on display at Bend in the Road. These were genuine racers from the early 50s with a history to them To most LSR guys there is a huge difference between real and replica. Building a period style using correct pieces is fine but most LSR guys would go, Why? If you are going to build a bellytank why not build a competitive one? None were ever built for show. The post by tWisted Wheelz offering a CBR 600 is the motor you want. Hell, That post even got me thinking. That would be a fantastic motor for a tank. Compact, plenty of power, reliable as a Swiss watch. That bare tank I saw at El Mirage a couple of meets ago and that motor would be a great combo. Maybe even a record breaker?

I guess I'm thiking on the lines of why build it if you aren't going to race it. But then I've been thinking that way all my life. Never had a lot of time for show cars or bikes. There was an Aussie guy over here for a few days. He took in Bonneville and El Mirage. Took a few great shots of the SoCal tank and another at El Mirage. Worth a look. http://www.dlra.org.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1192&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

My point is tanks were built for a very specific purpose and that is to go very fast. Why build something that is a complete opposite of that purpose?

Gotcha... Wasnt trying to give ya shit. Sorry if I came across that way. Im with ya... No point in building a slower car than your capable of.
