ok, i have to go through chicago when i go to indianapolis. i dont feel like running a days journey out and around the place, and i dont know it would be the smartest thing to run with the bulls on the interstate system. so i was thinking on running on the lower surface routes like hwy 41. one person said i may not want to do that because the after chicago the area gets on the rough side.

if i want to go from the wisconsin state line to the indiana state line heading from milwaukee to indianaplois what is the best route for a guy on a bike?

It's been so long since I lived there that I lost all perspective on how to get around the city. All I can recommend, however, is avoiding it like the plague. Even off rush hour getting out of Chicago to head to Indiana is usually a mess. Trust me, I live in Columbus Ohio now and have to make that drive all the time.

I would avoid it all together on a bike if its possible.

Take 39 south through Rockford all the way down to Bloomington and then 74 over to Indianapolis.

If you need to pass through Chicago, just be aware that there is traffic pretty much 24/7 no matter what route or street you take. Traffic's tends to be heaviest from 6am - 8pm on weekdays and it could vary on the weekends.

oi! hahnda! you found your way over here also! now you have to show these wankers some of your bikes. from what most of the locals have said i might as well take the slab and stick to right lane.

I don't know any good routes around Chicago, but when you're heading south out of Milwaukee, make sure you stop in at the Bong Recreation Site and maybe that will help relieve your stress :)

I used to fly from Toronto to Milwaukee every week, on a consulting engagement in Gurnee. Gave up flying into Chicago after my first flight. Midwest Express (at the time - think they've changed their name) from Toronto into Milwaukee and then the rental car to the Radisson just north of Gurnee.

Fun times - lots of time spent at the outlet mall.

Traffic is always "hetic" around here, especially from 3pm till about 7:30 or 8pm. After that it isnt bad. I would just "run with the bulls" and take the straightest shot you can and deal with the traffic. I have found trying to do a faster route just leads to a longer/more fustrating trip (especially in Chicago)..
