Best Sportster Year?

Ethanol

Coast to Coast
Talking to a dude I really respect and he said if he were going to buy a sportster it would be a 1968. What do you guys think? Don't know shit about Harleys.

Go for anything with the Evo engine. Everything is rubber mounted to dampen vibrations from the engine to the belt drive. It wont shake its self to pieces or fall over if you leave it running while you run in the house to get something.

But... those older engines sure look cool.

now why would i buy a harley? i like to ride my bikes... not just look at them and hope they wont need more fixing ;D

For the engine cases alone. First year 1957.

Sportsters up to around 1974 had right side shifting, factor that in. I really like them up to the AMF years, then they take a real nosedive in quality. The 60s Sporties are the coolest. I have no interest in the EVO, belt driven, rubber-mounted Sportsters, too common.

my personal fav is the 99 1200c... but the one i am getting the wife is a 05' 883 so i can do a 1200 hop up kit in it to make her SCREAM!

Sportsters = average middle class suburb man who wants Harley but too cheap to buy anything but the base line model. At least that how it goes in the suburbs of philly. I see way too many where I live on the streets and craigslist. They are too boring for my liking. The classics are probably a different story. No offense to you sportster lovers.

BTW, one of the funniest south park episodes.

i could not dissagree with this more... same as the "Chick" bike comments that are made on sportys. they are some of the fastest best handling bikes in the HD line up, as well as the reason that HD name is so respected and sought after now a days. Sporty is still my fav harley made, they constantly change and adapt this bike to reach new markets and are not afraid to take a risk, adn to be flat out they are not so cheap, a new super low is 11,500 out the door, to me that is not cheap by any means.

True...I agree that they are definitely not cheap. It's just a shame that I don't get to see more of these models on the road.

I think the Evo's are better, the Ironheads look cool and can be made reliable but they will always take more work.
Any Sportster should be street trackered , preferably with front head on rear and dual carbs so it looks more like a real XR.
if you do 1200 conversion, you can bore cylinders 0.493" and get special 'low compression' pistons to use with 883 heads.
I don't know how many I've done (a lot)
883 heads have a lot of potential when reworked, plenty of material to re-shape ports and combustion chamber, particularly if you fit oversize valves

we work on a ton of rockers and V rods... alot! as far as the converstion, PJ is dead on, plus the gearing for a 883 is diff and you will get a much better off the line

VRods arent HDs. Theyre Porsches. Seriously, ask the next guy you see riding one how they like their Porsche. If they have any idea what youre talking about, they MIGHT laugh.

ha, didn't realize it was jointly developed by Porsche.

I would love to have one of the 50-60's models. Other than that it would be a "forty-eight"

we are picking up a super low this winter for the wife so i can tear it all down and build her a hot rod sporty... awesome bike sickly over priced, but she will not let me get her an 05 and build the super low out of it,s he wants a brand new bike, then i will tear it all down and build what she wnats

it is really sick! jsut a great built bike and when i rode it, she rips! the wife fell in love with it... what mama wants mama gets!

not all evo sportsters are rubber mount or belt drive.
rubber mounted engines weren't available til 2004 and belt drive wasn't standard til 93.
my vote is for the 88-90 1200 model w/chain drive and teeth rattling solid mount engine.
also the sporty can be made into a formidable street bike with suspension mods, better rubber and a few tweaks to the powertrain.

built this one in 91.
1988 883 bored to 1200 with wiesco forged pistons and some other engine goodies and a buncha brakes and suspension mods.
lived in the wine country at the time and could keep up with the crotch rockets in the twisties.

it was a great styling exercise for hd but unfortunately most everything made in the amf years suffered from horrible quality control.
if i was going to ride any amf bike it would definitely be this one.
i actually had a friend whose father owned the local harley dealer and he got 3 of those bikes when they came out.
a year and a half later he gave one to his son, one to his service manager and one to his sales manager.
couldn't sell em. nobody wanted them.

But of course, how could I forget. And I'll raise you a 1983 XR1000, an even rarer Sportster. An homage to the legendary XR750 flat tracker with XR style dual carb heads on top of a standard bottom end. I've only seen one of these for sale around our area.
